Just like you don’t know anything about anyone else’s. You don’t know anything about anyone here, and your inability to hold a conversation speaks to you, not them. Pipe down, hypocrite.
It’s kind of you to keep engaging with this nonsense.
I’m reading this in two different ways, and to both I say: You’re right.
 Ok, I’m done.
I probably mean it both ways
When? WHEN did I ever claim to know anything about any of you? I have said over and over again how you can benefit from white privilege AND still experience hardship and adversity. I don’t think anyone here has an easy life or had everything handed to them because they’re white. That’s not what white privilege means despite popular opinion of this thread.
Yet you feel qualified to call them racist. Hope you’re enjoying your luxury lifestyle - maybe you’ll consider giving up some of the benefits you reaped from your widespread privilege to benefit those who have not. Hypocrite, to the max. Lots of mouth running while you sit in your mid-to-high-end suburban home in a safe neighborhood.
Ok now I’m done sorry @ladyj79
You’ll notice I didn’t call anyone racist until they expressed overtly racist views. I never called anyone racist over their opinion of the name but I drew the line when the conversation drifted towards “my white friend lost a job to a black person” and “I lost a scholarship to a black person” because comments like those show that the commenter sees people of color as less qualified by default. THAT is racist and absolutely not ok.
“The point of identifying and exposing inconsistencies within the social systems and cultural norms of the United States isn’t to make whites feel guilty, but to garner greater empathy that will inspire change.”
Well, that backfired spectacularly because Leslie Wylie recklessly overlooked other important social points (as well as the economics associated with changing a venue name less than 3 months before a huge event),
“Keep in mind that the call to “recognize your privilege” does not translate to “bear the blame.” Privilege refers to the myriad of social advantages and benefits associated with being part of an in-group. Said benefits exist whether or not one’s earned them or consciously vied for them. In fact, almost universally, privilege is something conferred without the recipient having any say in the matter. Thus, when announcing the existence of privilege, it isn’t about shaming someone or pointing an accusatory finger. It’s about deflating inequality—not imposing guilt.”
“What can those who identify as humanists, or even those who simply consider themselves decent people do to combat systemic racism? Make a concerted effort to humanize and identify with all individuals.”
Wylie was far more focused on Denis Glaccum, Cuyler Walker and the BOD of Plantation Field as two-dimensional cartoon cut-outs rather than as people and business owners.
They were talking about quotas. In those cases, a qualified person did lose a job to someone else. Whether or not that other person is qualified AND disadvantaged or not is something you dont know. When a quota is involved based on skin color, the individual who was qualified but passed over to fill the quota did lose the job due to the quota.
Are you intentionally looking for reasons to misinterpret what people say? I don’t know why people believe that indignation is fun, but to each their own.
How does that expensive purchased-new couch feel on your righteous behind? Hows the stainless steel refrigerator look in your granite kitchen? Give me a break…
How does that expensive purchased-new couch feel on your righteous behind? Hows the stainless steel refrigerator look in your granite kitchen? Give me a break…
Does this mean there is a gently used sofa sitting on a curbside somewhere? Mine is getting pretty beat up after 20 years of adults, kids and canines using it.
I got mine (x3) from a thrift store gently used… my animals etc tear it up anyways, so I’m always banking on blankets and slip covers.
Yeah, I have used sheets, blankets, etc. Now it is time for a piece of plywood under the cushions to keep from sinking to the floor.
My couch I got for free off Craigslist is super comfy thanks for asking. “My” refrigerator isn’t really mine it belongs to my apartment complex and isn’t stainless steel but it’s covered w/ pics of my nieces and nephews so you couldn’t tell anyway. Counter tops are a mess as usual. Ooh actually my garbage disposal is broken so thank you for all this kitchen talk because I keep forgetting to let my landlord know so I’ll go ahead and send that email now. Thanks for checking!
Do a quick thrift store run! Maybe there’s something decent that doesn’t require quite as much… ahem, TLC. I’m on Craigslist and FB marketplace often, too.
Nah. I think I can get another 5 years out of it and/or the youngest resident will move out and need a free sofa. Complete with ambiance!
But we didn’t, we did nothing. At all. And yet we still feel entitled to control the narrative from the back benches.
Which is not going to work going forward, that is what I am uneasy about. I am looking forward and don’t like what I see for this sport. We are falling behind with all our 1990’s PR strategies that are shopworn and are not going to fly in the current environment. You are trying to kill the messengers.
There is a problem here and we have handled it badly, and we have no plan going forward on how to do better next time.
And insulting each other may be entertaining, pretending anecdote=data might be comforting, closing your eyes sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting “LaLaLaLaLa” might lead you to believe that the scary bear is gone away, but these are diversions.
@Equkelly
Because I do not appreciate being gaslighted by you. Post #1480, you called me a racist because I appreciated an explanation that helps me to understand people’s reactions. I am still waiting to hear why that is racist.
I know I am saying this in a really clumsy way, but I am alarmed by this mess.
I don’t think it will encourage people to be tactful, or to go through channels(what channels?) or to be temperate and deliberate when they see a problem.
@B and B this is post 1480 and nowhere did I call you a racist.
“You are trying to kill the messengers.”
No, people are pointing out that the self-appointed messenger failed. Utterly failed in achieving the goal. Not only did Plantation not change the name of the venue (I’m not even certain they could that close to the competition), doubling-down by accusing the owner and BOD of racism ended up costing eventing a really nice venue.
I wouldn’t have had a problem with someone or several someones (like the USEA representative who was blindsided by the controversy) to have gone to the BOD to broach the subject and planned on doing so with at least a modicum of civility and data. Why? Two reasons: 1) PFEE is a business and businesses should run on DATA, if changing the name could potentially lead to MORE business revenue, well… 2) upsetting someone who owns the property to the point where they kick you off of it - permanently - isn’t helping open up the sport to anyone. Nor is it winning allies. Not even reluctant allies. USEA could have brought up the discomfort members felt about the name, despite knowing that it had nothing to do with slavery, but in the spirit of civility and hospitality, what about (name suggestions)?
Alternatively, USEA could have done the hard work of changing their practices and indicated that from 2021 onward, venues would be referred to by their town/city names. Boom - done.
It was short-sighted and if the point was to cause harm to or shame Mr. Walker for having been born into a family of wealth and privilege it may have succeeded (no idea) but mostly it blew up in USEA’s face. The riders lost and so did many other groups. Naturally, as this is the evening thread, the focus is USEA and eventing but they aren’t the only ones who may have permanently lost access to the site.
Leslie Wylie comes from a background of wealthy and privilege herself in no small part by her father inheriting the family business. That is the very definition of White privilege. She could have led by example with her own money and her own resources - straight from her pocket - rather than telling someone else what to do, first. I still don’t understand why she had a GFM in order to go riding in Mongolia. That strikes me as something you do on your own dime, or that of your employer if this was in service to EN, rather than begging others to pay your way.
