Exiss Trailers

Thanks Kiki414.
I have a 2 horse G/N now. One of the reasons I want a stock is because they are so open and airy.I like a box stall to groom and tack up in and they have more space to relax in during a show.

Does your trailer have matts on the floor that are slippery?

Thanks for the info and the picture, Hattie. I was wondering how you managed to fit two box stalls into a two horse gooseneck (do you have elephants or warmbloods)!

I wonder if there’s enough room in a normal warmblood sized two horse with a removable divider to ship one horse in a box stall environment. Never thought of it before. What are the reasons for NOT trying something like that? I suppose maybe that’s the point of a removable divider - I’ve just always done long hauls with a trainer or shipper.

The trailer I have now is a 1984 Arndt 2 horse G/N. It’s still sound and I’ve done very little maintenance to it. I just kick around town with it but my horse doesn’t come off it well. That’s why I want a stock.

The Arndt is a very good trailer too.

JB - maybe that was the reason the president of Trail-et chose to pay them a visit!!!

For what it is worth, I did chat with him for a few minutes and asked him about their sales of straight vs, slant load, since they seem to have about the widest variety of straight load (sorry, my horses start at 16’3 - slants could be considered cruelty on a 7 hour trip!). He said about 50% of their sales are straight load, and as far as he can tell they are the only aluminum/al. hybrid manufacturer that actively markets straight load. He also mentioned - and this makes perfect economic sense - that slants were primarily marketed because they are the most efficent way to haul more horses per cubic foot. That is fine if your horses max out at 15’2 or possibly 16’, but all the same, I’d rather make sure mine feel good when they get off the trailer!

I took a ride out east to look at exiss trailers today. This wasn’t the model I want but it does have a big step up.The bigger the trailer the bigger the tires therefore a little bigger climb.
Very nice trailer though.

My horse trainer friend HAD an Exiss. She spent most of her time towing it back to the dealer for repairs. It leaked like a seive and since they never fixed it right she sold it and bought a new Four Star which she loves and has never given her any trouble.

Okay…now I’ll really confuse you. I like the Collin-Arnt trailers. I think they have a lot of integrity, pull great, look great and are well made.

Well, the Equiquest fell through I learned that they were made by some people who used to be with Merhow who felt they could make a better trailer. Apparently the were good trailer makers but lousy salesmen, as they are no longer in business, so you won’t find too many of them around.

I have heard nothing but songs of praise for Southern Alamance Trailer - Ray is a wonderful guy (for a salesman! ). I had a long talk with Gary, the mechanic-type, and he told me that he recommended Trail-et (obviously), Gore, and Kingston, as they were all about the same in quality and functionality. They see any brand trailer you can think of come through there for repairs, upgrades, maintenance, and most of the rest that I asked him about he said usually had inconvenient or serious things go wrong with them too quickly. That is not to say that no other brand of trailer is good, it’s all what you’re willing to live with (and the possibility of) and what the cost is to you.

Sleepy - all I can say is “hybrid”!

I have heard from 2 people, one of them being a guy who has been in the sales/repair/upgrade business for many years, that Exiss is going out of business. Not sure if it’s totally true, but something to think about.

WOW Hattie and Novice what great information thank you.

I’ve been lookng for a used G/N aluminum stock or stock combo for years and never found one.I finally decided to break down and buy one.
This information means alot because there are so many mftr’s out there.
The Exiss are resonably priced though.I think 4star and CC are close price wise.
Thanks guys!

JB, thanks for the recommendation! I’ll look at them. I’ve never heard anything but positive things about that brand.

No they combined with another trailer company(Elite?)
What trailers does your friend like? Even if they went out of business I would imagine the company you bought it from would still back up and service the trailer.

I was talking to a friend last night and she told me she has a friend with a Sooner trailer and she thinks it’s a piece of junk! That surprised me I thought they were supposed to be good trailers. She even went so far as to take their name off her trailer. Interesting huh?

Anybody else out there have a trailer manufacturer that they like?

Rory - I just visited a nearby trailer dealer, for Trail-et, and they had a fascinating trailer on stock that sounds exactly like what you’re looking for. This is, I think, a Windsor model. Gooseneck, side ramp, normally a 2h straight load, but in front of the horses, between the horses and the area where the side ramp is, is a removable partition. The guys was explaining that a lot of people use that middle section as a grooming stall for shows. Anyway, this could be modified to be 2 box stalls instead of a 2h and a “space”, if that makes sense. Go to www.trail-et.com, and look at the Windsor, or it might have been the other “W” name. HUGE trailer!

Well Rory (and DMK) that’s good because I’m this far from buying one!

Glad to hear that the opinions I heard are backed up from other dealers and mechanics.
I’ll probably end up buying that Kingston - side by side I favored it slightly over the Trailet just based on some personal tastes.

Woohooo - now, I just need to figure out which completely undervalued stocks I need to sell at a loss so that I can pay for my trailer. Ugh!

Thanks again.

but I have never owned one so have no personal experience. But people have told me the handles break off, etc. …I also saw a used Elite trailer once, it was 2 -3 years old - the floor was wavy where the horse pawed, and they had pawed completely through the mats in several places.

Trailet’s are sort of like Kingston’s in that they combined steel and aluminum in their construction. I’ve never heard a bad word about them.
Do they last as long as a well constucted alum.trailer?

JB - I spent some time talking to the Trailet/Ford dealer out of Hendersonville (sponsor at Biltmore) - can’t recall the name just now, but they seemed like nice people, and had the president of Traile-et down for the weekend. He too was a nice person, and I could tell he was committed to the product.

I have not had one moment where I have regretted buying my trailer.

Also, thanks to that website you posted, I have now found my “next” trail-et Yup… the Windshadow Eventor. A 2 horse gooseneck, straight load with back and side ramps, dressing room, tons of storage area in the gooseneck AND the trailer - a “home” for the YSOD!! Perfection. Of course, since I currently have an expedition, and am committed to keeping it for a few years, this ain’t happening anytime soon… But I see an F250 in DMK’s future

Clive’s Mom - one thing is for sure - that trailer will probably hold it’s value better than the stock market!
