Monmouth has a pick 5 for the stakes.
TDN also says 8:05pm ET for the Haskell as does TVG.
Hoping I can make it home in time
Local track (Western PA) had extra precautions in place but proceeded with post time at 1pm. Meadowlands (NJ) postponed 7:15 PT till 8pm to wait for sun to go down.
I’ve seen several Facebook group posts about the “horrors” that occurred today. I am not really sure what the right answer is here but as far as I can tell, all horses at the tracks I mentioned above (thus far; Meadowlands isn’t over yet) made it around just fine; fast times, good closing speed, etc. It is gross hot out - at least in my neck of the woods - but I am not sure it qualifies as abuse. Depending on where you are in the nation/world, this might be just another day.
I am pretty sure if there had been any issues, it would have been blazoned all over the headlines by now. Because of the Santa Anita deaths, horse racing is under the microscope now, and while many true horse people have genuine concerns, others, including the PETA et. al. nuts, have other agendas. It was my worry that anything bad, even something not related to the heat, would have been attributed to the heat.
I don’t think running yesterday counted as abuse by any means. The precautions taken by the tracks that did run seemed to work. (And full disclosure: I rode my very fit guy, hunter/jumper, in 95 degree heat yesterday: walked 15 minutes, worked 15 trotting and cantering with lots of walking breaks, walked 10, and cooled out under a hose. He was fine.)
The race horses are out in the heat a very short period of time, probably 25 minutes total. It’s the people who are working every race (gate crew, starter, pony people, outriders, etc) who are at risk. And the jockeys who won’t drink a drop because they have to make weight.
Well, Maximum Security came through. Hope he has a good post race recovery!
