Looking at the cost of breeding a TB foal and getting it to the track–or a sale–the BC nom is a drop in the bucket ($400 if paid by 10/15 of the year the foal is born). And for a young TB who is intended to go to one of the major sales, lack of that nomination can be a psychological deterrent to buyers. The majority of foals are nominated “just in case”.

True if one is only breeding the odd foal each year. 10 foals, $5,000 not a lot in the grand scheme of things in some ways. But considering the majority of horses bred each years have a tough time getting productions cost back it adds up pretty quickly year in and year out for us “little” guys. The back bone of the industry.

Again in IMO and may others the BC has done little to nothing to “promote” racing, bring new owners into the game. I had a number of in depth conversions with the father of the BC, John Gaines about this over the years. Mr. Gaines resigned from the BC Board not long after its conception because of a difference of opinion of its future growth and how it would best serve the “greater good”.

There were some light pedigrees going for big money, by recent years’ standards.
