be sure to recess the entrance back away from the highway a distance to for staging area to allow for a truck and trailer to be clear of the highway … one needs to measure from the property line not the edge of the highway
and if building some pretty columns for the entry do not hang the gates in the center of the column as such mounting really limits the type of automatic gate operator that can be used
two horses were hit and killed in the road last night not 2 miles from my farm. A nightmare. Hit and run so I guess the driver wasn’t hurt too badly but they could easily have been killed too.
Privacy trees increase the value of your property substantially (and your taxes too if you were to call county and snitch on yourself). It is a good investment. The key though is to plant the right kind of tree. You often see Leland Cyprus trees as privacy trees because they are affordable; however, the Leland Cyprus is one of the most short lived because they are very susceptible to pests and disease. Green Giants are better investments but may need more care if you live in a place that suffers summer droughts. I would plant several rows on all four sides if I could
Privacy trees are great, but you would want to go with a native tree or bush and make sure the plants are compatible for the soil, ex azaleas like acidic soil. Native also should be more disease resistant.
goodhors’ suggestion above is what I would go with so that you have not just a simple hedge but a layer of forest along your property, and all native plants which need no maintenance. I love the idea of trees for privacy, for an added barrier to keep your animals off the road in case of a fence break, and for keeping the horse out of sight of drivers. I’ve read that trees are not a good sound break, but perhaps HungarianHippo has resources as to combinations, plant spacing or tree varieties which are more effective, or if it makes a difference.
I realize this is something which happens very rarely but I always get anxious at the idea of someone shooting at my horses from the road, so out of sight, out of mind.
How much work will it be getting them established (trees). What about wind knocking trees onto fences? Maybe a thick privacy hedge between the fence and the road, like eleagnous?
