Favorite "Home" Remedies / "Human" Products for Horses?

My horse is super sensitive to fly spray so I make my own. I use essential oils, mineral oil and a squirt of hand soap. This works like a charm and he loves it! It is the only spray he stands still for and will let me spray it everywhere on him. It also smells great and is perfectly safe for human use.

I also use A&D cream on his white nose as sunscreen. He is not as fond of this remedy but it works much better than sunscreen and stays longer.

I use Ivory soap for bathing and am a huge fan of the triple antibiotic ointment it is a staple in my trunk everyone always asks me first before they reach for anything else. I always made my own polo wraps with the sale fabric it was usually crazy patterns so it was fun for the pony kids. Prid, epsom salt, and diapers for abscesses. I buy the gel ice packs for wrapping after work. I am also a fan of Gatorade powder in the water or table salt I’ve never bought electrolytes.

Vick’s VapoRub in the nostrils of stallions when trailering with a mare. Or, when a mare is in season to calm the boy down.

Always Listerine. Also, St.37. It’s an old astringent and mild. If your drug store doesn’t carry it … they’ll order it for you.

Bleach in water barrels - dump the barrel, lightly pour bleach down the sides and let sit on the bottom for a few minutes, you barely have to scrub … maybe 1/4 cup or less does it.

I use Prell for my own hair. Loved it for years.

Listerine/ Apple Cider Vinegar (50/50 mix) - Use on everything - fungus, itchy tails, skin scruff, as a “shine”/ finish spray, clean brushes, use vinegar and water to rinse after bath for soft shiny horse

Hibiclens - The people version of chlorahexidine/ nolvasan. Not cheaper than a big gallon of it but again it works on everything - I use it to clean every wound, any fungus, add a little to water when cleaning brushes

Baby shampoo - cheap and supposedly non drying when I have to bathe my grey 5-6 days in a row at a show

Nexium - see Simkies thread re ulcers

Witch Hazel Wipes - not sure if they qualify as cheap, but these are great for wounds on areas that are difficult to clean with a hose (like the puncture wounds and cuts my mare had on her face a year ago) they are supposed to be non irritating. Have also used them to clean my mare’s udders - don’t have to worry about rinsing out soap!

I don’t like Prell from my own hair. Why would I make my princess use it?

I use the flexible ice sheets in a pair of non name brand SMB’s for cheap ice wraps.

I use witch hazel as a rub down for legs and skin so soft in mane and tails to repel ticks. My friend uses wood floor wax to repel water on her horses feet.

I do use the blue shop towels all the time at the barn.

Tresemme B12 conditioner for growing tails. Had one swat his tail out one summer on stall rest. Slathering his tail in the B12 conditioner, braiding it, and putting it up in a sock took his tail from above his hocks to touching the ground in a little under a year.

Adding to the list: baby wipes. I buy the fragrance free, sensitive skin kind. Using them to wipe down my girls’ udders is part of our regular grooming routine. Also great for wiping out ears and tackling schmutz anywhere.

Does your hair have poop stains because you use poop as a pillow?

horsehair is also completely different than human hair.

i don’t bathe my horse in $38/bottle pureology, because, you know, he is a horse.

LOL!!!

The thing is, Pantene works really well on poop.:yes: You’d be surprised at how well it does! I can do her whole white spot on her side clean to a bright white, with less than a dime size drop (measured in my palm) of shampoo. People in my barn have looked at her all spiffied up, and exclaimed in surprise at what that stuff can do. Just be sure you rinse really well when finishing.

And comparing an $8 bottle of Shampoo to an $88 bottle, is well…

I had never heard of Purology, and had to look it up. Sounds like a rip-off.

And I’ve never used Prell on my mare, but have tried it on my own head and didn’t like the results.

@kaya842 - thank you!! I looked up Hibiclens and it’s WAY cheaper than the “horse version”, Nolvasan! :encouragement:

I’ll stop by Walmart and pick some up since I’m running low.

Lots of good suggestions, here (I use human conditioner on tails myself), and Listerine; whoda thunk it was so effective?? For mane and tail crud/dry skin, I used a dandruff shampoo followed by Listerine, and it worked WAY better than Equus, MTG, etc…

Prell is used to strip a hair dye job, I don’t know anyone who uses it as a regular shampoo. I hate Pantene because it is full of silicones, so I don’t use it on my own hair since silicone is terrible for hair.

Well, I use Prell on my hair and have for years. I don’t have dry or oily hair. I’ve tried tons of other products. Horses have a different ph in their skin and hair from humans. I don’t use Prell on them. Fun thread.
