Favorite Non-fiction horse-themed books? Or books to avoid?

I didn’t realize Unbranded was a book; I only saw the documentary, which I loved. I’m going to get the book.

The book Half Broke: A Memoir, by Ginger Gaffney, is outstanding.

Thank you to everyone that has posted on this topic. One day before our little neighborhood horse camp began one of the horses that we borrow had to be put down. The horse camp kids washed cars, trailers and horses to raise money to purchase horse books to donate to our local library in memory of Cinnamon. This thread has given me some ideas for books to purchase.

One of the posters mentioned “Light Horsekeeping.” I practically had this book memorized as a child. I used to beg my dad, an atomic energy research scientist, to change professions and become a farmer so that we could love on a farm and I could have a horse. (Didn’t work…)

And then, “The Horsemasters.” I dreamt and dreamt and dreamt of being a “Horsemaster.” And then, lo and behold, in my 40s I did it! I spent 3 months doing intensive BHS training in Yorkshire followed by another 6 weeks up at Gleneagles in Scotland. An amazing (and trying) experience!

Hooray for you, becoming a Horsemaster!!!

Headless Horsemen is excellent. Read his other two books, they are hilarious.

Also Stud by Mark Conley. Often funny but all true.
Taking up the Reins Priscilla Endicott. She goes to Germany to really learn to ride dressage.

Equine ER by Leslie Guttman. This book could have gone on for a 1000 more chapters and it still would not have been enough. Loved it.

Avoid: 104 Horses. Family is evicted from Africa, leaves behind their horses, all of whom die hideous gruesome deaths. Awful.

And thank you all. I have reading to add to my list. Yay:yes::yes::yes:

Warning about the Ruffian book - the last about 1/4 inch of the book you will be in tears. it’s a hard read from that point, but you have to to understand what happened. I remember just sobbing.

Horses Never Lie by Mark Rashid

It changed the way I look at things and I hear parts of his words in my head with every interaction with my horse. Definitely a game changer.

The Perfect Horse, by Elizabeth Letts-
For people who like history this is a reality interesting story about lipizzaner, thoroughbred, and polish arabian horses who were seized by the Nazis during and eventually rescued by the american millitary during WWII. It’s quite well researched and includes a very interesting history of the breeds and of the horse as a cavalry mount.
