Well yes, I have the same problem with all oily products. So we are for sure doing it wrong together.
Maybe you’re using too much?
It takes literally a drop.
I put product on my hands, rub in like I’m using lotion, then run hands through the mane/tail before brushing.
A 4oz tube lasted years. Not in use daily but still…
Because I am CHEAP, I deal with winter tail grossness with a mix of water and mineral oil in a spray bottle. Degunks and conditions. Also great for breaking up those concrete-like formations on hocks and knees from lying down outside in the mud.
Oh my - memory time: My BFF here where I live went to heaven 2 1/2 years ago. She and my gelding adored each other and he had a weird fluffy forelock that frizzed out horribly, despite the fact that is mane was thin an scraggly. She always used the Sleek & Shine on his forelock and I would tell her don’t make my boy smell fruity tooty, lol. My gelding is in heaven, too.
This thread is mostly distraction for me - my mom went to heaven (can’t say it any other way because it hurts) on Sunday. I haven’t been to the barn in almost a month as we dealt with her illness and dementia. 94 fab years for her but I still need my mom. And now my 2 sisters are bullying their way through funeral planning and ignoring the things I’m suggesting as the one who lived close to my folks and knew them better. Sigh. Nothing like death to bring out the worst in families. So I plan to lay low, continue to be ignored and go make my new pony shiny and beautiful. And hope she remembers who I am!
I love all the replies, I haven’t read them all yet but it’s a lovely distraction from life!
Oh @reefy, so sorry about your mother!
I hope you and your pony have a great time together. Pony’s have a great ability to make so many things better.
There’s nothing better for the inside of a person than the outside of a horse.
Sorry for your loss.
So so very sorry for your loss. I hope you get to spend hours beautifying your pony to ease your pain.
So very sorry for your loss
I really try to only use detanglers as needed in the winter because they build up, in my opinion, and just get gross during the months we cant wash the tails.
I use as needed, usually Cowboy Magic, and then jump on every 70+ degree day throughout winter (I am in South Georgia so this happens throughout winter) and give it a good soap bath with hot water to restart the yuck-i-fying process again. lol
I absolutely love Shapley’s Magic Sheen Polish. It’s the only thing I’ve ever used that doesn’t make tails gunky or sticky. It doesn’t dry out the tail hairs and it lasts for days.
My two horses both have white tails, and my older guy often struggles with diarrhea in the winter. So tail care is a big thing at my place.
I am so sorry for your loss! Be distracted and have a lovely time with your shiny new pony.
I use the spray on kids detangler found at Dollar General. Spray, work in, leave in place for a few hours to a few days, comb out.
I LOVE Knotty Horse and use it exclusively. My mare’s mane and tail have a tendency to get dry, so any silicone products really mess it up. Silicone detanglers are great for short term use, but can lead to damage and breakage because they’re not super moisturizing. The KH apricot oil is amazing year-round, on wet or dry manes/tails!
