Favorites from the 60's and 70's!!

was Marilyn the teeny, tiny amateur? If it’s the same person I’m thinking of, her green chestnut gelding was Splitnix…purchased from Mervyn & Bessie. I think she had a really cute chestnut with a white face before him, but a piece of the film is missing and I can’t remember his/her name.

Roger had Coming Attraction through his 2nd year green and showed him in the hunters.

I think Gary rode him after Marni…you’re right, he was a teeny, tiny tot!

Comming Attraction was the hunter that Roger Young had. It is also the same horse that Friendship Farm (Hewitt’s) had. He made the “big leap”

OMG!! This is a blast! Where do I start? Cindeye, I must know you! I had Hootnanny, then Nowhere Man, then Cordial, then Understatement, then Sam Herself! Then 12 years later I got Free Time but didn’t show much.
Who could forget Brock!! I didn’t know Lola very well but Jim Brock was a real character!
Not Again (Ann Schoellkopf’s) was a saint! I loved him. He was killed in a trailering accident.
Suzie “Noisy” Lenahan was amazing on Roses are Red. Than she had Logically who either won or flipped over! Noisy was a riot!
Gub Gub got sold out to California. They changed his name to Landmark and he was a superstar out there for years!
Coming Attraction was a greenie when Roger had him. I thought he went to Bert DeNemethy but I don’t remember what became of him after that.
Joani Wells dated my brother for a short time. They got in big trouble over a fake ID!! Heehee!
OAK - Toy Town was in the 50s!!
Babygreenqueen - Wendy Price’s other horse was a chestnut with 4 white sox and a blaze. We called him “Sox”. I never liked that one. Too klutzy.
OAK - I knew Thom Hardy but I don’t remember him getting the ride on Coming Attraction. I had a horse at Highfields while I was in college. He bought the mare from me (for Mrs. Hewitt) named Understatement and did her in the jumpers. I think he renamed her Undercover. She apparently did well on the Texas circuit for a few years before she blew a tire and became a broodmare.
Mrs. Hardy and Sharon Hardy (now Cole) had wonderful ponies! One was foaled on a night I spent at the farm and I said the pony had her foal just for me because I was there. The foal was named “Highfield’s Just for Me” and went on to be quite well known!
Was Jet Run in the 70s? I thought he was 80s. He is one of my favorite horses of all time!

What about Chuck Graham and all the good horses he had.
Neal Shapiro, Carol and Judy Hoffman (Richter) Bob Freels, Jerry(wife)Kathy Kusner etc. Untouchable, Abrarili, Jacks or Better, Tomboy Good Twist Late Night,

Thom Hardy did ride Coming Attraction for Mrs. Hewitt, followed by Peter Stoeckel. Joe and Conrad even had him for a brief while.

Jet Run spanned the 70’s and 80’s. He was at Winter Place in early 70’s and retired in late 80’s.

Yes, Marilyn was a teeny tiny amateur and she did get another horse named Sultan. But Pippen was the one she did the most winning on.
Carol Shepard’s best horse was Shadow Lake. He had the most rhythmical canter I ever saw! He always went super slow but won everything! I swear he was what helped Carol develop her flawless eye. She rode a lot of terrific sale horses for Roger over the years.

Okay, I am on board. Teeny tiny Marilyn is absolutely the one I knew.

I also remember Jill Beake proudly introducing me to her new horse Balls…Eyeballs, that is, because he(she?) had prolific people-type eyes.

LOL!! Actually we called her “Eyes”! She was a sweet horse…good mover except that she paddled.
Cindeye, please email me! I am dying to know if I reallt know you!

And oh, what I wouldn’t give to watch Dave Kelley ride one more time! And Cappy Smith, and Gene Cunningham. . . .[/QUOTE]

My grandparents owned Cap and Gown and Navy Commander - I’ve heard a lot about those horses!!

It truely amazes me how many really wonderful horse people evolved from the Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse tier. I’m surprised you can leave the sport for so long and then pick up a Chronicle and they’re still at it…after like 35 years. Missy Clark is another one.

Cap and Gown was awesome! I was thinking that one was in the 50s but I guess it was early 60s.
Yes, the “icicle circuit” (upstate NY) had a great group of very competitive riders back then. Roger Young, Chucky Graham and John Shafner (may they all RIP) were terrific! Also Butch Manley, Jack Frohm, Ted Roulston…who am I forgetting?
Anyone remember Don’t Panic and Patty Urbanik? I loved that horse and Patty and I were good friends back then. Haven’t seen her in 20 years now.

Susan Blaisdel’s Highfield’s Tulip was one of my favorite ponies, I think she was national high score award champion at least 2 years in a row. I didn’t know that is now Snowbird’s farm.

I saw Coming Attraction with Peter on board at the American Royal years ago, in fact I think I still have a newspaper clipping/picture of them. In one class that horse put in such a spectacular jump on the last fence and landed so hard that Peter was knocked off just outside the timers. He hit hard . WE stopped by the stable area on our way out and asked if he was ok and the other rider (Hannun?) told us that he wouldn’t be walking straight for awhile.

They had some really nice horses that year

Peter who?

Peter Stoeckl

I was from the Syracuse area so I remember the Hubers at Orchard Hill, the devastating fire at Ronao Farms, Dr. Ninos had a farm somewhere and of course Ted Roulson but just can’t remember the name of the farm, Cold Creek maybe? That just doesn’t sound right. I remember Salad Days and Jill Beake’s Bunny Petite died in that fire as well as Kathy Winkert’s lovely Cream Sherry. What ever happened to Betsy Hoppel?

Yes! I remember Hubers. I think Ed is at the race track these days.
Cold Creek Stables is correct.
I remember the Joey Stone/Mary Davoli/Kathy Winkert problems! What ever happened to all of them?
Betsy Hoppel got divorced from Jim. He worked for a college and died a few years after that. Betsy moved to Wellington, Florida and became a sought after judge. She then married John (why can’t I remember his name!!! Grrr…)and he passed away about a year and a half ago. As far as I know, she is still in Wellington.
I remember Tim Tomkinson and the bay mare Kitty Hawk(?) in the jumpers. And Peter Ambrus with his roan horse that I thought was terrific! And Susie Bryner! And I adored John Bryner!
There was a blind girl in Buffalo who had a horwe named Aramis. She didn’t win a lot but was amazing to watch ride.
I see Tibby Hunt now and then. She is a vet. Anyone know where Cynnie is? Is Mrs. Hunt (Bobbi?) still around? She was delightful and one tough cookie!
Anyone know where Susie Farrelly is? She had Motor Mouth then Preview.

HOLY COW, LESSONLADY!!! I do remember all that stuff with Joey/Mary/Kathy. I know the Stones had a son they named Joey Jr.,while at the same time having a dog named Josephine. I was friends with Debbie, when she married John. Their wedding was my last horsey hurrah and I headed for school to become self-sufficient. I don’t know what happened to them after that. I miss them, but I have absolutely no regrets for the path I took. Naomi Blumenthal probably knows what happened to them. Somehow I think at one time Joey headed to Binghamton to South Winds Farm. Thanks, Lessonlady, you be jogging these crusty, rusty brains!!

Hey, elizabeth1!! Debbie and John broke up. Then John developed cancer and suffered for a long time. Debbie came back to him to help him when he was dying. She was a spokesperson for Millers and because I had a tack shop, I saw her at the trade shows. Later she married Steve Stephens. She has a successful barn and wonderful jumpers! Unfortunately, her most experienced jumper, Cosequin’s CEO, died in this EHV outbreak in Wellington this past December.
Anyone remember Mary Jane Chapman and her gorgeous chestnut? (I switched with her in a Medal class in Bradford! What an incredible horse!!) Then there was Patty Mancuso and Mr. GP, Chrissy Connor and Vintage Year, Kelly Connor and her lovely brown mare, the girl that rode with Butch Manley who had Mohawk Flight, Tibby Hunt’s black horse Wind Flyer, Jackie Heineman with her tall thin grey whose nickname was Ilya, Lennie Mazza and her sister with Rustico, Susan Blaisdel when she showed Schoellkopf’s black horse we called Batman, Barbara Conti with Bronze Star,…my memory seems to be better this morning though pieces are missing.
