I am glad you posted this. Because it is the exact opposite of the problem I have. It just goes to prove that it is so hard to make a line of clothes that will work for everyone.
I am with you on the muffin top though. Mine is totally here to stay too. Darn thing.
I question aloud where there really is a market for yet another “better than the rest” brand of breeches. Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but it does seem like a particularly flooded market where buyers are very swayed by brand name recognition and what is sold by major retailers.
Thicker material that won’t wear out in the blink of an eye. The yoke cut higher in the back so when you sit down you aren’t showing off your Underoos. The old Lee Aura jeans had that cut and they were lovely to ride in and wear in daily life. Regarding pockets, I’m at the point where I no longer want to have the hassle of enlarging pocket bags in pants so I can use the darn things.
Whatever you decide to do, use size models of different sizes. Scaling a 6 up or down doesn’t work nearly as well as actually having two or three size models in a 2, 6, 10, 14, etc.
I agree, except that I am dying for breeches with pockets. I just do not understand why schooling breeches always only have one teeny front pocket. I have no use for butt pockets, so the brands that added those instead of a second front pocket of a valuable size don’t do anything for me. Thigh pockets on both legs big enough for phones on actual breeches instead of leggings or leggings-like breeches would be the bees knees. Why don’t women’s clothes ever have pockets, street nor equestrian???
I’d LOVE to not have to carry a purse when going out. I certainly don’t carry a purse while riding. And since I ride by myself about 98% of the time, keeping my phone on me is about safety, not screen time.
I’ll be surprised if we haven’t put OP off the idea by now! The problems have all been clearly stated-very very small pool of consumers, very technical patterns and fabrics needed and price point will probably not be where a lot of people will want it to be. I do appreciate the efforts it takes to innovate and create new products and I would be willing to buy a new better pair of breeches. I’ve been a TS side zip fan for years until about 4 or 5 years ago and then switched to Struck for the fabric(it is the BEST fabric on the market, imo). The rise is slightly too low for my taste but it’s the best I’ve found for now in quality and wearability. Very pricey, but 1 pair will last and last. Good luck if you do pursue it OP-the world needs risk takers to show us all what we’ve been missing!
Now how about a sunshirt with a really secure phone sized pocket that has silicone or a zipper or something to really hold tight and a hole for headphones?
I would kill myself first, honestly. Jump off a bridge. Ride a 4yo stallion who rears. Show in western pleasure (sorry if anyone gets offended by that.
If you weren’t a size 24 you could see everything. Everything. That, even for a younger rider who’s a size 30, is a terrifying thought.
For tops and jackets I go almost 100% to general outdoor and sports gear. Better color fit style quality and way better prices than equestrian gear and way better sales and discounts because volume. I have one show shirt I bought second hand and if I needed more obviously I’d buy proper equestrian gear. But for schooling my discount Ralph Lauren/ Hilfiger Cotton Polo shirts are perfect and last forever. And I picked then up over time at the discount store for $19 or $25 CAN.
As far as breeches I just pulled out my Cavallo Candy for spring and summer wear and noticed they have really faded on the thighs where the sun hits. This should not be happening at their price level. Otherwise they are holding up fine.
Yes that would not be pretty on me. I can’t even wear riding tights because everything goes up all the crevices and fits like pantyhose, if that makes sense. I could get into the XL Kerrits Fit tights with the real leather oatches but looked like I was wearing long underwear.
Sing it, sister! Pockets are a must! And I’m totally with you on the butt pockets on breeches. Who thought that was a good idea? While we’re at it, how do people even use regular pockets while riding? If I put anything more than a small treat in my front pockets, it bothers me terribly in the saddle. But maybe I need to stop leaning forward so much
Honestly I don’t think I have a preference for rise as much as a disdain for having to pull my pants up all the time. For me that means high-waisted breeches are my go-to. I’m a big fan of tights for the comfort but have yet to find the perfect pair…
Overall, OP, if this thread shows anything it’s that you can’t please everyone. Best wishes if you decide to go forward with this!
My trainer can ride a 1.35 course with her iPhone in her tailored pockets without a worry. I have to tuck my phone into my waistband if I ride with it or I lose it about two strides into the ring. It must be body type?
I just switch to a belt pouch in summer. I like to carry a wallet with ID when I ride off property in case I end up in ER or need to call a cab home :). Plus phone which gets bigger every time I have to replace.
Then there are treats.
Tights look awful on me and many others. They can cling into every crevice like long underwear or pantyhose does. I didn’t even come out of the changeroom in the FITS with leather patches. They were big enough. They were just hideous and naked looking. And I look reasonably OK in “real” breeches that fit.
I have an old pair of the original Anastat Das (that may or may not be spelled correctly) breeches, these are what I would love to see again. Heavy fabric that had plenty of stretch but wasn’t anything close to being like athletic like leggings; were flattering on all body types and sizes. Deer skin knee patches or full seatl. Give me a high waist please, they fit at or slightly above the waist! These breeches were also custom sizing but were still affordable.
