Feeding 2 month old foal?

I don’t know what the NSC is for the LMF Development, but I think it’s probably not all that low given the first 2 ingredients are barley and oats (for the Northwest product) and “Recleaned Whole Oats, Soybean Meal, Steam Rolled Barley, Ground Corn, Whole Wheat” and “Steam Rolled Barley, Recleaned Whole Oats, Ground Corn, Whole Wheat, Steam Crimped Oats,” for the SW formulas in the G and A formulations respectively.

Given that I think I’d keep the LMF SS G and add alfalfa pellets. The latter won’t hurt baby to eat, and if you can feed a few pounds of those each feeding, that might do what you need.

tnx. i didn’t like the look of the development - it just looked packed with sugar.

i already feed 5lbs of alfalfa pellets - so i will just up that and remove the COB.

Anything else i can feed that will have good caloric punch?

and just to be clear: baby is in lovely condition. I only want to get her her “own” food so she doesn’t eat mums. she is a VERY good eater!

here is a pic from their inspection - the mare has lost quite a bit of weight since baby was born (she was fat when she foaled) and baby looks very good to me.

Ooooo, lovely!! Mare looks very good  At 2+ months, the demands of lactating should be starting to taper off a bit, so you might actually be ok just dropping the COB (how much are you feeding? I might have missed that).

baby is just now 8 weeks (born june 14)

i am feeding 1lb COB, 1.25lbs RB, 2lbs Alfalfa pellets - twice a day. This is a reduction in what she was getting after she foaled. she is losing weight and has lost quite a bit since foaling.

eta there is NO grass in their paddock at this time of year. i have asked the guys to up her hay but feel i need to get her weight up a bit even still.

I agree with JB…,. both, mare and foal look VERY good! Congratulations - you must be doing something right!

well alrighty then! i wont worry! and thanks!

I think they both look good too! I don’t know if your guys could/would do it, but if they could drizzle some oil onto the alfalfa pellets and baby couldn’t get to them, that would give her some more calories. Tough one, add weight on momma w/o getting pony genes fat…I feel for you. I just revamped my feeding program now that ponies are, ahem, mature (4 & 6) and totally cut out the LMF/TDI-10 I was feeding and went to soaked Timothy pellets along with a multi vitamin, metabolic support, flax and vit E. Shockingly enough, no protests. It is amazing what they can do without and what they really need.
