Feeding Enrich Plus

I recently switched my gelding from Strategy to Enrich plus because he is such an easy keeper and I’ve been working on him losing some weight. He’s been on it since the beginning of February.

I don’t know anyone else in my barn or area that feeds Enrich Plus, so my question is will the higher protein content cause him to have more energy in the same way that rich alfalfa hay can make some older horses have more energy and be a little hotter? Because I don’t want that and will look into other options if that is a potential side affect. He gets daily turnout and I’m working him 5 times a week.

So does anyone out there have experience with Enrich Plus and have you noticed any increase in extra energy/hotness?

Thanks in advance!

I feed it to my tb cross. She thinks grain is rocket fuel, and I switched to enrich partly because it does not make her hyper. Also, keep in mind you are feeding very little. She is getting the 1 pound per day recommended on the bag as the minimum, as she is a bit fat- I weighed it out, and it comes to 1 CUP of feed in the AM and the PM. That little bit of food wouldn’t make her crazy even if it was sweet feed.

I feed my easy keeper Enrich and she didn’t change a bit. It’s been great for us!

Long story short: no. IIRC, the “too much protein” hotness is really more attributed to more starch and sugars in feed. Horses need protein or they can’t function. Plus, remember protein is fed in grams and 32% of one pound can be less than many pounds of something with a protein percentage in the teens.

Awesome! Thanks for the info, that was the direction I was leaning, but wanted to see what other people had actually experienced ‘in the field.’

Thanks!

Late to the party; but, my welsh cobs are on enrich plus and I definitely do not see any increase in energy due to the ration balancer.

I feed enrich to all 4 that range in age from 3 to 28 years old and all look fabulous and I haven’t noticed any excessive energy. Really like this product a lot.

I gave my pasture boarded mare 1 lb of Enrich Plus per day for several years. No “hotness” issues.

I was riding a horse for a lady who was feeding 2lbs of Enrich 32 to her air fern Arab. Luckily he was spooking so much left to right that he basically stayed in the middle.

He was worked WTC for 40 minuter 2 times a week and trail ridden (mostly at a walk) for 2 hours once a week. I suggested to her that he probably didn’t need 2 lbs worth of the Enrich.

She backed him down to 1lb and he was back to being his normal forward self.

If feed reasonably for the work the horse is actually doing, it is a great feed. If you feed more than the horse needs, you may find you have lots of horse. This is true of any concentrated feed you may be using.
