Feeding gelatin as a hoof supplement? Does it work? How much?

I have been taking Hydrolyzed Collagen myself because I am almost 50 and my body ached. I had read numerous articles stating how Collagen is amazing for the human body because at about 30 or so the human body stops making its own collagen so a person would need to supplement themselves to have continued nail growth, less wrinkles, less body and joint aches etc - So last Novemeber I started taking 11 grams or 1 scoop daily and in 2 weeks I noticed a real difference in my body aches. My nails grow like crazy and my skin looks better than it has in the last 10 years!

SO, I happen to have a gelding that has a suspensory injury. I had him on smart tendon, but then heard about Equinity which is basically amino acids - but no collagen. I purchased some so I could see the label and try it out - but also started giving my gelding Hydrolyzed collagen thinking he would have the same benefits from the amino acids and collagen that I am having…guess what? He is moving better. The healing is also coming along too and I have noticed less head bob at the trot. I now have all FIVE of my horses on 1 scoop or 11 grams of collagen. Its more than anything Smartpak has to offer. Their highest level of collagen in their product is 5000mg. Thats 1/2 of 1 scoop of human grade collagen. I have read several studies on collagen for horses and they suggest that it even helps ulcer healing. Here are some article for your enjoyment. =)

We’ve used it before. It does seem to have a benefit but AFAIK there are not controlled studies. So decide which acacdotes you want to believe!

Not sure about studies, but my pony goes cray over the orange flavored jello in a syringe when I need to give him meds. When I was giving it to him daily, he did grow foot faster.

I was wondering about making an actual jello fruit salad, jiggly and all, for my horses birthday. After reading a lot of the responses it appears it won’t kill him. This is a great group, highly informative. Thanks.

You HAVE to post pictures of your horse consuming that!

Well personally I’d use the flavored Jello. Who cares what this silly Harvard physician thinks, or has found through research!:wink: However, if you do take the time to read it, you will find that you are wasting your time and money.

Which company are you getting your collagen from? Is it a human product or a horse product?

sorry! I JUST noticed this. I purchase this collagen for myself - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06W2K24CZ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and this collagen for my horses - https://www.customcollagen.com/store/gatco-collagen-20-lb-pail/ my WB mare gets 2 ounces daily because she is huge and weighs more as does my AQHA gelding who has a suspensory injury so I want to make sure he gets more than enough collagen to help heal his ligament. My other sound horses get 1 ounce per day for joint maintenance.
