FEI Standardizes Noseband Tightness

A variable here would be how hard you push to get that piece through. I can see some folks saying they are legal because they can muscle it through. And complaints if a steward stops at the least little resistance.

Serious question - is any elastic allowed in the cavesson?

I donā€™t think there is a rule expressly forbidding this. Elastic is allowed on the headstall and bridle - thinking specifically of the Passier Fortuna, which does have elastic in the headpiece.

ETA:I stand corrected. There is language that says elastic is only allowed in cheek pieces and the crown piece.

Bet that starts showing up, then!

Thereā€™s a thought.

If itā€™s elastic enough to move with a tool going through it, it might be too elastic to strap a jaw shut. But you never know; thereā€™s no limit to what people will do for a competitive edge.

I have been wondering how this rule change will impact certain noseband styles.

No, elastic is not allowed in the cavesson.

Elastic inserts are allowed in the crown and cheek pieces only and must not come in contact with the horse or the bit.

That makes sense.

Why would anyone who doesnā€™t ride in FEI classes be upset about members (who actually need to know the measurement) being first in line to buy the device?

People feel weirdly entitled? People expect things to be pushed out immediately and en masse regardless of actual logistics?

Well, the other side of that coin is, this item is very simple and can easily be mass produced once they determine their design, so there really is no reason for it not be made in a quantity where people can buy them and use them as a door stop if that makes them happy.

I donā€™t think we know how it will work yet, so thereā€™s no need to anticipate problems.

Hopefully @Mack_the_Knife will post here as well as on the cross-posted thread on the Eventing forum.

Well, sure, but none of that happens in 5 minutes.

Wellā€¦ya would think that once FEI decided, they would have figured out the logistics so people could procure the item AT THE TIME they made the announcementā€¦so people would have time to adjust their tack

Hereā€™s what I know about the noseband device at the moment. The device was extensively tested in all disciplines. The FEI Stewards I have talked with have noted the device was well tolerated by the horses they used the device on. Originally it was planned to implement this procedure January 1st, the start date has been pushed back to May 1 to allow for distribution and proper training. It is the intent that this would be made available to everyone, not just FEI officials (so no need to try to fabricate one or perform surgery on a rubber door stop to approximate it!) Method of distribution and cost to purchase hasnā€™t been determined yet. I had suggested that here in the US the devices be made available through USEF. When I know more Iā€™ll be happy to post it on this thread. Just for reference I hold three FEI steward licenses (eventing, jumping and driving) and I am the Steward General for US Eventing.

Thank you @Mack_the_Knife. :slightly_smiling_face:

Iā€™m from eventerland so I wonder if there is any discretion for e.g. a really small pony versus an 18hh warmblood. Seems the amount of room on the small pony shouldnā€™t need to be as bigā€¦ has this been addressed?

Wouldnā€™t the gap between the nasal bone and the noseband be the same measurement allowed?

Speed costs money, and not for nothing, that supply chain may not be on life support but it sure isnā€™t back to previous form.

Thatā€™s a can of worms. Height at the withers doesnā€™t correlate to noseband circumference. My 143cm pony wears a bigger bit/larger noseband than my last horseā€¦ All 16ā€™3 hands worth.

Anyone should be able to buy one at some point. I understand that those who NEED one (TDs, etc.) should have them first, but then they should be available for all. Itā€™s not only FEI riders who need to be kind to their horses. We all do. I wonder how long before knock-offs come out. Soon, I bet. It should not be a proprietary thing. It should be a tool for better horsemanship at all levels.
