I always say that electric fence works until it doesn’t. Once one learns to get out the others will quickly follow.
I have a big Nubian - he got zapped ONCE by the electric (never heard such hollering in my life!), and has never gone near it again. He lives in 5 strand hot wire with his blind mare, and is totally respectful of the fence. But - that is a BIG goat - I think the small ones are harder to keep in.
The smaller the goat, the harder it is to keep it contained.
OP,
Plan on using the horse stall until you can reliably call them/entice with grain to follow you. Your fence plan may work but that’s questionable. If/when they get out, they’ll be in scary new surroundings and may be hard to catch. So make sure they know you & associate you with yummy treats, so you can gather them back up again.
Be aware they like to rub their bodies along fences like this. If your poles are not very sturdy and spaced pretty closely, and if you use light gauge wire fence, even small goats will stretch the wire and push your posts around.
Our goat pen is cattle panel with chicken wire on the inside (to keep them from sticking head through the panels). Works well.
Why not start small-- just fence off a pen (the size based on what you’re willing to spend at the moment), and you can increase it in increments.
HH - thank you for the great advice. I agree that a smaller pen for them around the shed we will be building tomorrow would make great sense. I mentioned it to DH and he was skeptical that it would make a difference, but as he always tells me, “You’re the animal person!” So hopefully I can convince him to construct something tomorrow after we get the shed built.
The guy we’re buying them from says they are used to coming for the shake of the grain scoop, but with them not knowing me yet, I’m sure that will take some time. I’m a nervous wreck with all these comments saying there’s no way this is gonna work. :uhoh: Especially since we live in the middle of nowhere and if they get loose I picture a coyote catching them before we do.
They’re being delivered Sunday afternoon, so we certainly have plenty of time to build something. I may just go to TSC and buy the stuff and start putting it up myself until he grudgingly comes out to help me. Thanks again for your help.
On the bright side, the dogs won’t be bothering them at all. They let us know quite regretfully how well the hot wire we put up works.
Don’t worry, it’ll work. But just eeeeeeaaaaasse into it. No need to solve 18 acres of a fence problem all at once, when 2 goats will be happy as clams in a 20 or 30ft pen.
Have fun, we love having goats. Ours are actually “free range goats” now-- they stay right with the horses so I don’t have to pen them anymore.
It’s not only that you need to keep the goats in, but potential predators like coyotes out.
The goats arrived this afternoon and so far so good with the electric fence! The nannies have stayed away from it, but we’ve seen a couple of the babies test it and squeak and run away.
The whole day was kind of a fiasco though because our builder/friend was supposed to come yesterday to build a three-sided shed for them, but had personal issues and wasn’t able to come. So we bought a calf hutch and thankfully that should keep them safe and warm for the next few days until our builder straightens his stuff out and can come and build the shed. Hubby added a wooden floor to it and put it up on 4x4’s so it should be comfy for them.
The guy delivered them and was so nice and helpful, answering all of our stupid questions. Turns out the babies are all only about 2 to 3 weeks old. He’s going to email me their birthdates later today so I can keep track of them.
All in all, though, it’s been a very satisfying first goat experience. They’re shy around us, but not overly so. I figure sitting with them in the pasture over the next few days/weeks will get them friendlier toward me. They are just so fricken adorable! :love-struck:

Awwwww … that last one with the white kid, oh, my, past adorable!
You will have fun, glad that the fence is working.
Oh wow, TEN? Somehow I thought it was just 2. They’re adorable and you’ll have a blast. Pretty much nothing on earth is more entertaining than baby goats.
Hey, just like the ones we used to stuff back through the fence! Note the horns. Cute as heck, have a great time!
They look good. Going to be all over the place in no time lol. Good luck and enjoy em.
My old doe Narcissa was of this type of Pygmy. They are fabulous. She had a big mouth. I miss her. She had a stroke or seizure last year and had to be put to sleep. She was the queen of Tarzan yells when she wanted a boyfriend.
