I still have nerve damage from those boots, but they looked nice!
Tradition is a bitch.
And so it is. But there was some fabulous body-sculpting clothing way back in the Enlightenment fer f’s sake!
What crappy swamp of a more recent tradition did ill-fitting riding boots come from?
My first tall boots were dress boots, back in the 70s. In the 80s I got custom field boots, my next pair of custorms will be dress. I love the look.
I snagged a pair of brown field boots a couple of years ago. I absolutely love them. I had been thinking for black boots, I would wait and get some custom dress. Then, I should be prepared for any occasion, right?
I wasn’t around for buttons and garters with tall boots… I think the buttons were closures to keep the lower leg fitted (no stretch blends, yet!), but what about the garters? I feel like it’s not the same reason for garters with Jods - or is it?
I LOVE the look of dress boots. Especially now that boots have zippers up the back so that you can have a really contoured look to the instep and ankle area of the boot. Looks super classy. In fact, I really wanted to get a pair of dress boots when I got new boots, but the price on the field boots was such that I couldn’t pass them up.
Love the look of dress boots! My Parlantis are the dress version, and I’m definitely seeing a lot more dress boots around shows. If you love them, get them!
When I orderd my Parlantis…must be at least 6? years ago now, I ordered them without laces and in navy! I get so many compliments on those boots. They have been my daily riders since then and are still looking and feeling great. They last a long time. They also have the curved zipper which is my absolute favourite thing, it makes the spur so much more comfortable.
Being the following sheep that I am, I won’t be buying dress boots until field boots are completely “out.”

Baaaaaaaaa…
I think dress boots are the new “in thing” right now. If you look at any picture of the top equitation kids right now, chances are that they will be wearing dress boots. But, of course the difference between me and them is that they probably get new custom boots at least every year, so if they decide it’s not in style they can just switch them out for field boots.

Does anyone find themselves just a bit toooo neurotic about the height of fashion boots? Since I’m constantly trying to make sure my riding boots are tall enough, fashion boots kind of make me crazy.
Yes! I’m 6 foot tall with long legs and a slim calm and it’s almost impossible to non-custom boots that are tall enough for the modern look. Now I’m obsessed with customs but with baby #3 on the way, #1 just starting riding lessons and I have high hopes for #2 to follow that path too

I believe the garters kept the boots from sagging and the breeches from creeping up.
