Finding a Trainer as a Re-rider

Usually you get more answers if you start a new post, rather than appending your question on to an old one.

If you don’t feel like either of the barns you’re currently riding at is a good fit, then absolutely keep looking. It’s your money and your hobby, so you should find a barn where you’re happy. I would probably be up front with new trainers that you’re trying lessons at a a few barns to find the right fit. Some might be upset about it, but that actually tells you a lot about the barn and the trainer.

However, the other thing to keep in mind is that the barn that is a good fit for you now, while you’re just getting back into it might not be the best fit for you down the road. Now, you might want a place with a lot of lesson horses and lesson options. In a year, when you are ready to look more seriously at leasing or competing, you might want a less busy barn that caters more to adult riders.

Thank you, Gardenhorse. Very sound advice, particularly about communicating with trainers and considering what’s working for me at the moment.

I’m right there with you, getting back into the saddle after a 20something-year break. Like you, I’m splitting my time between two barns because they each offer something I feel I need.

As a PP pointed out above, if it’s my hard-earned money, I’m going to decide where to spend it. But I’m staying very open to the idea that what I need/want now might not be what I want in another 6 months. Lessons are not a blood oath to stay forever and ever.

There’s nothing “disloyal” in trying out another trainer or barn, but also pace yourself and don’t go chasing some ideal that’s more suitable to the Before You rather than the Now You (maybe you used to jump 3’, but you’re currently rebuilding a solid two point, etc.). Keep your ears and eyes open; the Horse Universe has a way of putting the next horse/trainer/situation into your path when you’re ready for it.

Thank, AllTheCarrots, and glad to know that I’m not the only one riding at two barns! I wondered if that alone was somehow strange or unacceptable - but you’re right. It’s all about trying to find what I currently need in the sport. And thank you for the advice about pacing myself - again, so wise.

And, by the way, good luck to you in returning to riding!

Thanks, @SadieRidingHorses! Same to you.

I saw that you’re in the DC area, as am I. Happy to trade PMs about barns and options that I’ve uncovered.

Thanks @AllTheCarrots! Sent you a PM (I think - still figuring out forums!).
