Finding an OTTB in CA?

I’m not too keen on being run down with pitchforks so I’ll wait on that one and see if he gets listed openly. Nice horse though.

That MatthewL is a very nice type of horse. I’d be concerned about spending that much on an OTTB though. I always feel like there is an element of risk with soundness when they’ve raced. Plus on top of that there’s letting them down and the retraining - which all adds up. Maybe I’m just frugal

I’d say cheap, to be blunt. They’re selling at a massive loss considering what it costs to campaign and maintain, and he’s no more likely to be unsound than all these stupidly-priced show horses who fail PPEs. I’d never bother spending five figures on a horse I planned to ride, total waste of money, yet that’s what people selling “purpose-bred” sport horses want for babies.

Wow. He’s nicely, bred, too, and a looker. Glad I’m not in the market and 1000 miles away…my only concern with this particular horse would be why the year off in 2013?

“Matthew L” looks nice to me. Almost ALL of the trainers/owners are negotiable on price within $500 or so, too - so keep that in mind. Good point about the year off - if you’re interested in the horse at all - give the trainer a call and ask him about it. (You can also do a PPE - which may help in any decision making & negotiating the price, too!!!)

There will be more listings on CANTER after Stockton, too. Once ALL the fairs are done - those listings will fill up. It always happens that way!

I hadn’t thought to examine the race records!! You make a good point there, noticing the horse had a year off - may just have been coincidence but does scream injury…

When does the Stockton fair finish?

Matthew L looks terrific. I know the trainer, and have gotten two really nice horses through him. He not only knows race horses, but hunter/jumpers as well. Very nice guy, honest, and takes really good care of his horses. If I had the room and the money, I’d get this horse in a heartbeat.

A new listing came in for a pretty nice looking 3 y/o daughter of Touch Gold out of a Mr. Prospector mare. Only $750. Looks a bit like my guy. Raced 3x as a 3 y/o, looks like they started out aiming pretty high with her ($26k maiden special weight) with big drop in class in her 3rd race.

ETA: Wow, KY bred and dam’s dam is two time Diana Handicap (G2) winner! Only concern is why she didn’t start until May of her third year.

She won the Diana only once. It was the Sheepshead Bay she won twice. Not only that, she was a Broodmare of the Year-- a truly outstanding mare-- and dam of Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero.

Glowing Tribute was absolutely lovely; all class.

Ooh, she is cute! Thanks for the heads up

Dang - CANTER California just added 7 new additions on the N CA Listings. Looking like the Fair Racing Season must be winding down! Those listings always get busy after the fairs close! Some neat looking horses… and it sounds like Matthew L sold. Anyone here get him??
