Finger Lakes Cutie

I like that the gelding looks uphill standing downhill.

I really like WayLady and keep going back to her. And I am in the market for new horse. Love TB’s and would love a grey mare…I have just never bought a horse directly off the track and am a little ovewhelmed by the logistics. I am in SE PA.

Lovely filly. Assuming she moves sound I don’t see much wrong with her legs that a good farrier couldn’t fix. The gelding’s front end looks a couple of sizes larger than his hind end, but I would certainly check him out in person. Happy horse-shopping!

Beau - What are you waiting for? GO GET HER! Call!

My experience with buying a FLF was not directly off the track, but the trainer was lovely and easy to deal with, just wanted to find my guy a good home. Most trainers would likely be very willing to make something work that you are comfortable with.

Beau- I bought my Skipping Class mare from that trainer last summer. He was very nice and easy to deal with. Go get her!!

I have a question…I buy OTTB regularly and there is a definate upswing in prices @ track. I was stunned to see these $4k and $3K FLF

I also hear back chatter about how “Us Re-sellers” buy their horses and re-sell them for alot of money

2 years back I could buy a lovely horse @ the track for $1K - $1.5 and give it a breif down time re-start and re-sell for $3.5 ready to go into a new life.
When having to shell out $4K @ the track for a very unknow prospect that hasn’t seen a jump and you don’t know for sure it will pass another PPE once off track grounds de-toxed and everything sets up w/ lack of poultice/sweats/dailywrapping/icing/hosing/ and help
is it the economey squeezing the trainer or do they feel they want a piece of the pie??
This is not a dig, when i have to pay $4k for a horse it means I have to ask $6500. which puts the pinch on my clientele…

There are a bunch on that page that are cheaper. The one I want is 700

My sense with CANTER/Finger Lakes is that trainers of tall/grey/geldings (pick 2, or ideally 3) tend to get a little crazy with the price. No idea if they actually get that–I have 3 bays without white . . .

I think this girl is a knockout: http://fingerlakesfinesttbs.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=thoroughbreds&action=display&thread=98. And only $500.

prepurchase exam has been scheduled on Waylady

The economy plummets, the prices go up. Interesting thinking.
(Not talking about the $500 one.)

I have bought a lot of TBs for $1000 or less that were initially priced upwards of $3000 - $4000. If you show up with cash and trailer and make an offer, the price has a way of dropping. Especially if you can find some kind of ding or slight problem to suggest it will be harder than they thought to get the inflated price. I did once encounter a woman who thought her horse was worth $10,000 and would not budge, but that attitude is the exception rather than the rule! So I go to see such horses assuming I will be able to make a deal, but prepared to accept the possibility of a wasted trip if I cannot. If a horse is truly outstanding, of course, a higher price may be justified.

You want gorgeous? And only $2000? Someone buy her before I convince myself I need a broodmare.

Nice but ummm a little expensive? Out here we can pick up similar horses for $200 to 500.

Ohhhh, if the one you want is $700 I think I know who that one is! Are you serious? Please be serious. What can I do to enable you? Video? A piece of mane? A long strand of tail? (Given to you in the hope that you’ll say, hey, I need more of this horse than this!)

My vote is for Magic City Mama.

I don’t like the pasterns on the grey mare. She is very, very typical of the Unbridled line (didn’t need to look at her pedigree to figure it out).

That said, she’s run 20+ races and appears to be sound, so she might function just fine.

Oh, I’ve been doing this along time…probably as long as your ages.

I always have my trailer and cash…but time honed contacts usually know what I want will pay and know I don’t tire kick. So few to never buy from cold calls anymore. Track trainer and I hashed this same question out the other day over lunch. She made a few calls on some $4k n up cuties and the trainers wouldn’t budge…and those horses are still for sale or sitting on a farm.

I remember when $500. got you alot and then $1000. and $1500.

I also remember a brief time when $5000. got you 16.3 clean sound and fabulous. Before slots, state foaling money, and the bottom claim $$ went up and now you get paid to show up and hobble over the finish line.

I wish!!! I already have 3, though, which is too many . . .
But yes she reminds me very much of one of my current ones that I love, both in conformation and breeding.

Though, I see some new ones have just been added and I really think someone also needs Magic City Mama.

I agree that if you’re buying tbs to resell it’s really hard to make a profit if you pay a couple of thousand, unless you find a true diamond you can sell for big bucks.

At Finger Lakes there is a range of prices and there is no sense to it. Each trainer prices his horse based upon what he thinks he should get. If the trainer owns the horse the price is usually lower but if he’s selling for an owner the price tends to be a little higher. Sometimes the trainers get their high prices and sometimes they end up giving those horses away in the end. There is no set pattern to selling horses there.

It does seem there is something for everyone though. So if you need to keep your spending down then find the less expensive horses. We just listed two for $500 each and they’re sound and very athletic looking. The less expensive horses are more the rule, in fact, and the high prices are the exception.
