You look darling (and you won the important classes!!)
I am so glad you had a good experience! Congratulations, I think you picked up a .5 point in HH, good for your!
Thank you everyone!
I asked my trainer if they ever waive jackets at those shows b/c you know the halter and showmanship gals are sweating in their heavy blingy jackets and she didn’t recall them ever being waived. I was in the barns when they made the announcement that coats were waived for hunt seat and I hear a loud “WHOOP!” come from somewhere. It was great!
Congratulations, I think you picked up a .5 point in HH, good for your!
Since you bring that up…for the points, do I get the points per judge?
For example, in Open Working Hunter out of three horses, I got 1st under all 4 judges. So is that 1/2 point x 4? 2 points total?
And Open HH, I was 1st under 2, and 2nd under 2 out of 4 horses. So 1/2 point x 2…correct? 1 total point?
Do all of these points combine for my horse? Or do they break it out by division?
It is a set of points per judge.
So 2 points in OP Working Hunter
1 point in OP Hunter Hack
1 1/2 points in AM Hunter Hack
1/2 point in level one AM HH (which is more or less your point because it is not an open class)
leveling still appears to be a work in progress with AQHA so …the above statement may or may not be true in a couple of months or days.
Points combine but also break into division depending upon which awards are being tallied.
All points will be listed on your horses record but there are some differences in cumulative awards.
The open points stay with your horse and forever accumulate for cumulative awards like ROM’s.
The amateur points accumulate for cumulative awards on a one horse one amateur basis.
The points will still be on the horses record if he sells but another amateur cannot take over and get for instance a superior in HH by adding your amateur points to theirs.
Awards are listed starting on page 271 of the AQHA Rulebook.
The points go 1 per 5 horses
.5 if there are at least 3
so:
5 horses, first gets 1 point
5-9 horses first gets 1, second gets .5
The points are per judge
Anything less than 3 points so in any class where you were the only entry, you will not get any points
So Open HH 1 point,2 points in the Green Hunter
You need to look up the World Show Qualifying Points, you might not be far off from qualifying.
I’ve only shown at one AQHA show where they waived coats, it must be ungodly hot where you showed!
Thank you both so much for such informative answers!
and @Chuckles it was killer. The show was in Pensacola, FL and the humidity was very high. It typically doesn’t get this humid (which is weird being near the coast) but it was rainy on and off all day. We did have a light drizzle during the over fences classes but we couldn’t cool down w/ the humidity. My poor horse was huffing very hard and the judges were rushing us and not giving us much chance to catch our breathes. Also, with so few people in the classes, it was just go go go.
While we were loading up, my trainer goes “and we’re planning to show in August? we’re crazy.” At least the August show will be a polo shirt show (and it’s HJ, not QH)
LOL
Congratulations! I smiled reading your posts. Sounds like you had a great time besides placing so well in all your classes. Hope you go again and have even more fun and success.
Congrats! It is nice to start at a small show like that… .
I just checked your Regional show (Region 9), and they had no fence classes, sorry to say. I imagine there are other shows with fence classes within traveling distance, maybe ask Karen Evans Mundy where and when the best closer options are.
The Select World Show for amateurs 50 and over requires 2 points in all fence classes, with only 1/2 point required in jumping. That show is in Amarillo over Labor Day weekend. Open and Am World in OKC requires more points, is super competitive but does have Level 2 breakout, and is easy to look up
Thanks again everyone
@Plumcreek my trainer wants us to go to Dixie next year for the over fences classes. So…we shall see.
I would steal him, he’s lovely!
Nice!
Love, love, love your horse!
Thank you, guys
I know it is a ways from you, but the Big A show over the 4th of July at the Georgia Horse Park has the Huntfield AQHA Hunter Derbies You can find info and lots of photos on the Huntfield AQHA Hunter Derby Facebook page. Pretty competitive these days. Venice, Florida has a huge QH hunter circuit in Jan, with real huntery U/S classes.

@Plumcreek I’ve looked into the Huntfield Series before…but it’s been a while. I’ll go take a look again and see if we can find anything decently close that I can afford. Thank you for the info
You are inspiring me to try an AQHA show in VA! I have an Appendix gelding! Glad you had fun!
Do it! It was different for sure, but it was a good experience! I even got feedback from one to the judges which I appreciated since you know we very rarely if ever get any on the HJ circuit.
I’m definitely planning on doing more next year.
I was at that show last month. They had a good turnout, with lots of nice horses, and everything ran like clockwork. I believe they held the Derby in the Olympic stadium. I wasn’t there that day, but that had to be fun to show in that ring. Lots of history.
And congrats to the OP!
