Swat helps, as does Wipe. Coat the little guy.
Flies LOVE donkey legs for some reason. I have always used a nice thick coat of swat on the lower legs of my guy and it works like a charm. I wash his legs of about once a week and add another slathering though fly season.
I used to used the clear swat but have switched to the pink so that I can easily see if it has rubbed off and need a new dowsing plus pink legs on a male donkey just seems appropraite.
This.
Worked for my mule for many years. I usually had to grease him down every 2nd to 3rd. day.
Hey! This really works!!!

well… you could try hanging “pennies in water in baggie” method.
We’ve lived here for over 15 years, and every year the barn has been plagued with wasps and carpenter bees, all around the windows and the barn door entrance beginning in early spring until fall. Spraying and plugging the holes worked well, but it’s expensive and has to be repeated.
So, I read on here about the bags of water, with a penny, or even with no penny. WTH, it’s almost free - so I hung a big 1/2 gallon storage baggie filled with water and two pennies, (for each corner of the bag- up near the top of one of my horse’s stall’s window. To my shock, we’ve had ZERO, none, nil and nada wasps, carpenter bees or such creatures all spring or summer. This is ONE bag, I have three stalls! No where in the entire barn are there any bees.
But… I still have flies… and more flies… and more. Nothing scares off those awful things.

I wonder if you could make a cheaper Swat-like substance by mixing petroleum jelly with a small amount of pyrethrin and/or piperonyl butoxide? That’s basically all that Swat is anyway. You’d have to be careful to get the proportions right, but that isn’t rocket science.
Flypants
I have to say that I’ve never, ever seen anything quite like that except in cartoons. Do they actually worK? What about the heat? Wouldn’t your horse roast in those? Are they safe for turn out? I can see my neighbors looking over the fence at my horses wearing these things and thinking that I’ve finally gone around the bend.QUOTE]
Personally, I have never used them. But I know of people have. They are made of a breathable mesh, like a fly sheet.I believe you can turnout with them, as they do have a velcro closure so that they can break away if needed. I would say the white ones would be cooler then a darker color since it reflects sunlight. It might not be as cool as being naked, but it will stop the constant stomping and irritations.
The website shows a few horses running around with them, kind of funny looking. Never thought horses could wear pants.
Can you stall him during the hottest part of the day and put medicine on it and maybe some sort of wrap that he will not chew off or do you think he would even pull off Polo wraps or something to hold the medicine in place while it sits like an antifungal or antibiotic ointment?
The other thing I was thinking of would be what if you mix triple antibiotic cream with Desitin diaper rash ointment? The Desitin should hold up pretty dang good as far as creating a barrier between the Flies and his skin and it is not super expensive you can always buy off brand! You may have to wash his legs every few days depending on how much mud there is where he is turned out, but a tea tree based shampoo would probably feel very good and soothing to him and then you can put the Desitin back on his legs when they are dry.
Yes it may be a pain and time consuming, but hopefully he will heal quickly with that regimen (sp?) and then you can continue to put Desitin over his legs to keep the flies from creating new wounds.
ETA: Will your vet prescribe Silvadine oitment for the first little bit so they will heal? My mom used it for a badd arm burn with a clothing iron, she had seizures, she had one, fell down, iron went on her arm, we were little kids so had to scream for dad to get it off her…it was a huge raw wound…anyways, it healed it real quick and helped with the pain and protected the area. That with the tube socks, half stockings, nylons…over it would be a great start! I use desitin on my pony’s nose in the summer since he gets sunburn on it, so that is another good use for the butt ointment too lol.
