Fly sheet for the upright shouldered horse

I’m hunting for a new fly sheet. I almost ordered a Rambo protector, but then I read a few reviews indicating that it could be tight through the shoulder. My horse has large upright shoulders. So I’m still shopping around. Reviews indicate the Amigos have similar shape to Rambos. I have used Weatherbeeta winter blankets on him and while not awful, they don’t particularly fit his shoulders super well. I presume their fly sheets would have a similar construction. I’m considering trying one of the Schneiders Vtek sheets. In particular the mosquito mesh. Has anyone used one of their sheets? Other options? Go ahead with Rambo or Amigo? Are they tight on sloped or upright shoulders? Horse is not particularly wide through chest. But has upright angles.

Needs: fit for large upright shoulders, protection against Florida swamp bugs from tiny no seeums to giant horse flies, breath ability

Wants: UV protection, durable enough to last a whole season on a horse that is turned out individually and is generally easy on clothes

Also, does UV protection help horse feel cool? The Amigo Bug Buster claims 90% UV protection and sun reflecting properties. Is that going to help him feel less hot? Horse is stalled during the worst of heat and sheet is removed, so it’s not like he will be out 24/7 baking in the FL heat.

Thanks for your opinions!

I used the schneider’s mosquito mesh on a horse who had outgrown his rambo stuff in the chest/shoulder/neck (they got very tight across his withers and shoulder). I found that the Vtek did very little, although it was still better than the amigo fly sheet he was wearing. My favorite fly sheets are from premier equine in the UK. They are super, durable, good fit (they run big, especially in length), and have a variety of options for a good price.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I’m not sure I can get imported sheets right now, but will give those from the UK a gander. Were the Amigo and the Vtek the same siize?

Kensington sheets? Do they protect against mosquitoes? Too hot? Is the sure fit really as good as they claim?

I believe they are still shipping etc and their shipping is very reasonable.

The amigo was a 75", Vtek a 78" (he bulked out and outgrew all of his 75" blankets). When he bulked out all of our rambos started fitting tight across his withers, even the 78" ones. I found the premier equines were much more comfortable for him.

Thank you for the additional info!! That’s very helpful!

So I have 3 of the Rambo Fly Busters from last year and I just got the new style one the other day for my massive 4 year old. All of my OTTB’s have massive and sloping shoulders in addition to being thicker or will be thicker once they finish growing and filling out. I have zero issues with them rubbing and I’m half tempted to sell the old ones and upgrade them to the new style. We’re in Virginia and it gets pretty humid here and they all did fine last year in them!

Good to know! The Rambo looks like a great product. Maybe the tight in the shoulders reviews are from owners of horses with upright shoulders.

Pretty girl!!! Thanks so much! That is helpful!
