FML...Apparently dead raccoons are great toys!

If nobody can vent to the public about the problems that EVERY farm owner faces, then everyone will think farm ownership is a peach and anyone who has problems is just crazy. Everyone learns from these things. Some people are just more willing to share than others. This is a good educational thread too.

I found my youngest horse playing - in his mouth - what I thought was a stick. I was a dead, stiff snake  He’s also played with a dead, stomped frog  I’ve squished frogs in stall doors, run over baby birds with the pasture mower, found dead bats in the garage (which prompted an early rabies booster for the garage kitty), and more. Most of those I have posted in here at some point .

These things ARE aggravating and annoying and frustrating and sad in the moment. Nothing wrong with that, and sometimes it’s just nice to know we’re not alone. I didn’t get any sense of utter aggravation out of this post. I think it’s funny, and we’ve either all been there and can empathize with the OP and tell more stories, or will be there and will be grateful to know we’re not the odd man out.

I was getting ready to ask why there’d be quarantine if the animals are utd on the vaccine, so good to hear.

but if it’s positive everyone (including husband) will need post exposure.

People get the post-exposure series of shots, animals would get a booster if it’s been long enough since the last booster.

Glad you’re breathing a little easier

I tried to explain to husband dearest that farm life wasn’t the idyllic pastoral paradise he was imagining before we moved here…I went to agricultural school and knew better. Well, we’re learning together!

Horses. What do you do?

Thanks for posting, Dungrulla. It was interesting and funny.

Hope it stays funny and the raccoon doesn’t have rabies!

Let’s not kid ourselves, it will still be funny even if it does.

I think some states still require a 10 day quarantine. I think there is one state that requires a rabies booster even if they only had recently and weren’t at the end of the year. (There was a COTH thread about that). These laws may only be after evidence of being bitten.

OK seeing no quarantine and so far so good (KNOCK ON WOOD)…well get the cameras set up so you can preserve and share the next episode

LOL literally thought you were the same poster as a video my friend sent me on FB this morning.

Then I realized YOUR horses played with a dead raccoon, while the FB posters horses were playing with a dead squirrel.

For the record, @Arelle, SEVERAL people immediately went and tagged me in that.

Sorry, OP, I laughed. Because this is something my stupid horse would do. I mean, everything goes in his mouth. Yes, he has toys too. I think you too will laugh in a few days.

Ah, raccoons don’t really have rabies around here. Distemper is a major issue for them, but rabies is mostly bats with a few skunks here and there. Rabies isn’t something that horses ever get vaccinated for.

JB - I completely agree with your post - this one has been both funny and instructional.

However, I am praying dearly that EVERY farm owner doesn’t have to deal with dead animals in pastures, it will absolutely be MY horse that turns it into a game. :disgust:

Bright side; It could have been a skunk, then you’d have to worry about Rabies and the Smell <Razz>

Raccoons in general are a major vector of rabies, a close second behind bats
https://www.cdc.gov/rabies/location/usa/surveillance/wild_animals.html

“Bats were the most frequently reported rabid wildlife species (30.9 percent of all animal cases during 2015), followed by raccoons (29.4 percent), skunks (24.8 percent), and foxes (5.9 percent).”

I can’t imagine not vaccinating a horse for rabies when there is ANY rabies in a given area.

  Every owner will have to deal with something of this nature at some point, if they have enough horses and/or own a farm long enough

We’ve had a dog, a cat, and a horse get skunked

LOL, a horse, that tomato juice must have cost a pretty penny.
My (female) cats were polite with raccoons and skunks and gave them their required distance .

Hubby may indeed be a brilliant man, but some things are just beyond the scope of even the highest IQ…

I find this interesting and funny. Too bad about the rude comments. I just came to this board and someone already told me that if I am unhappy with my 17 month old filly I should just sell her… Very nice… So I sell and you just get to board. People need to be a little more understanding. Or moderators need to give out spankins…

If it’s any consolation I think his thought process was “Oh god I have to move it the horses might get sick! Aw crap it won’t go in the shovel all the way. I’ll just wash my hands real well…” NOT thinking about the fact that it’s a rabies vector or that the horses often eat hay out of the poop bucket when it’s accessible…

His heart is in the right place at least.

Oh, I wasn’t impugning his intelligence! Just having some fun with trubandloki’s typo - “teach” instead of “touch”!

I enjoy it when my poor typing skills make things funny!
