I had a filly who decided double barreling anyone who opened the stall door was great fun at about 3 days old. I took a jockey whip and crouched down on the other side of Mom and reached over and stroked her legs with the whip. When she stood quietly she continued to get petted, if she kicked she got cracked hard but had no idea where it was coming from. Nipped that in the bud right then and there and she is a puppy to this day. Is a great mom who doesn’t take any BS either. These first few months are more important than many people realize and it is very easy to get sucked into how cute things are when they are that size but are things that could kill someone in a matter of months when they grow.

ABSOLUTELY!!! A whip or a boot across “soft tissue” is a good education…not a “crime” that causes mortal injury!! My best mares keep their “kids” well mannered with a nip or a swat!! Not cruel!! I hate a permissive mare…those kids grow up to be terrors!!
