I feel your pain! My mare is 341 but at the clinic so I can’t even do anything but wait for news. I think I probably have 5 days or so to wait still but that is just a guess.
354 days and counting. Biting at her sides, down frequently at night, but pretty much remaining sternal. Frequent peeing. Maidens!!!
Congratulations; he looks lovely. Our maiden foaled yesterday and although not as worrisome as yours, I swear I will never foal out another maiden.
Yay, Barb! Congrats. Glad you can get some sleep now and there were no wolves involved!
finally! congrat AJ and Clint
Congratulations both of you! I am still waiting
EventerAJ, congrats on the new baby
Sounds like foaling may have been a bit dicey but glad that mare and baby appear to be doing well!
We will, of course, be expecting progress photos. I can only speak for me, but seeing all these baby pics brings a smile to my face that is much needed! :love-struck:
Me too! Please post photos after you catch up on your sleep! Congratulations to @clint as well.
Day 357 and my maiden mare still seems uninterested in letting go of this baby. She had some subtle odd behavior yesterday, that made us think last night was going to be the night. She was quiet as church mouse last night. Still no significant milk, but rear end is relaxing. I think she wants to be that mare that doesn’t produce milk until foaling, which is not one bit helpful.
Thanks! He’s a cutie! Hope he’ll straighten up without farrier/vet assist.
How is your mare doing with him?
Mare has gone from “don’t care if it’s wolf food” to OMG helicoter mom. I don’t think she let him sleep from 4am until 7am. When I woke up to peek at the camera, poor guy was swaying on his feet and wobbling trying to stay up. He went down, I looked away, and a minute later he was back on his feet. Came to discover that Helicopter Mom nuzzles, nips, and paws at him every time he tries to sleep! Forcing him back on his feet. "Get up or the wolves will eat you!"
His hind ankles were swollen early this morning, especially the contracted LH fetlock. I watched him nurse, then scooped him up and put him down. He immediately fell asleep at my feet. Mama instantly started nuzzling and pawing him to get up, I scolded her and she started neighing, circling and crying like her baby was dead. I stood over him and let him sleep a good 10 minutes; mare was allowed to sniff him and touch him, but no poking. He got up on his own, nursed, and a little while later he laid down again and I guarded him from pushy mom. She was a little better this time, and from then on has been allowing him to sleep peacefully, though she still nudges occasionally to watch him move. Yes, he’s still alive. Lol.
Oh, I’m sorry. Maidens are funny sometimes aren’t they? Bless their hearts. It’s a good thing you noticed. Poor little guy needs to sleep.
EventerAJ, How’s it going?
@EventerAJ He’s a cutie!! Glad that mom is figuring out a better balance of monitoring him
Interesting to see the size difference between the 2 mo old filly and the few day old colt!
Yes, the filly is big, even for 2 months. She’s about 12h and very solid. Colt is average size, a little smallish/thin, common for a maiden mare. But next to the filly, he looks like a shrimp! His ego doesn’t know that, though. He’ll catch up soon enough.
Barb will be bred to St Patrick’s Day (full bro to American Pharoah) in about 3 weeks. It is an A++ nick, the same cross as Four Wheel Drive (by Am Pharoah out of a Halo line mare) who won the BC Juvenile turf sprint. My husband wants to try for more of a commercial racehorse next year. And I like SPD enough to keep the foal for a sport horse, too.

That’ll be an exciting foal!
New colt is darling. Glad Barb is settling into motherhood. Share some photos with us when they are all together!
Thanks for the photos. He doesn’t look shy. They are both great looking babies!
We gotta wait another 11 months to see this one???
I know SPD didn’t show AP’S track “talent” but I still liked him. I think also a good choice as the AP’s at least so far, appear to like turf so opens up options both, iMO, on track and as a sport horse.
Keep us posted on this future bun in the oven
Yes, I have loved the Am Pharoahs I have seen so far, and they are doing well on grass. Big strided, smooth movers and super minds. Barb is G3 placed on turf, but has wins on dirt too. Already have 2 other mares in foal to SPD, very excited to see if he produces physical type like his brother.
