She thought the vet should have only done 1 or 2 ultrasounds. Not sure how that would have worked out, considering the mare was in standing/squatting heat with good edema for 6 full days…
and here i bemoaned that i had two mares get pregnant from a ‘gelding’. Don’t get me wrong, i love my little ooops foals, but i’d rather not have had the breedings…
Oooooh… Maybe it’s a good thing Arielle didn’t take if she thought mares follow the rule of averages. She could’ve really been in for a shock by the time that baby got here!
She’s used to breeding almost exclusively live cover (though she has done the shipping thing a few times in the past), where she owned the mares and the stallion, so she could just keep breeding until the mare caught…
I was reluctant to agree to this lease idea to begin with, for reasons too complicated to get into here. Not going to lie, I’m kind of okay with Arielle not taking for the lessee, as long as she is a good girl and plays by the rules for me on the next cycle.
Sounds like a reasonable deal to me!
Gosh, he is lovely @Montanas_Girl. Good luck! I found a couple of videos of him and what a cool horse. I wouldn’t mind one of those in my size one day!
WOW. That stud is bred up one side and down the other, isn’t he… He reminds me a bit of Khemosabi, with his 4 white socks!
Interesting pedigree. Do you know why his sire was gelded after having so few foals?
I do not, although I can speculate.
Mexicali Mac V was re-purchased by Varian Arabians (his breeder) in late 2012. He was gelded in early 2014. At that time, his paternal brother Major Mac V (sire of my 2022 filly Addy) would have been a two year old. My assumption (and it is only that - an assumption) is that it was determined that Major Mac V was the superior “heir apparent” candidate. Mexicali Mac V went on to be an endurance horse with the person who purchased him from Varian as a gelding in 2015.
His sire and dam were maternal siblings so that had me wondering about him being gelded after siring few foals. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
Yours (fingers crossed) will be part of Zee Kahili’s early crops. He’s had quite the show career but not long at stud?
Kahili’s oldest offspring is 5 this year (fun fact - she’s owned by William Shatner, unless she’s been sold and the transfer wasn’t submitted). He has 10 registered foals so far, so, yes, it’s still fairly early in his breeding career.
Honestly, though, the AHA registered a total of about 3,000 foals last year in the entire U.S., so you really can’t find many young-ish/currently relevant Arabian stallions at all that have a significant number of offspring in this country.
Marigold V, the mare that Mexicali Mac V is linebred to, produced 17 foals. She has 159 grand-foals. Datasource doesn’t make it easy to pull 3rd generation numbers, but Maclintock V (sire of both Mexicali Mac V and Major Mac V) alone sired 122 foals and has 334 registered grand-get to date.
I haven’t been around Arabians since the late '60s so have no idea what’s going on in the breeding world.
Hope you have better luck this time around. I’m sorry that your new old girl won’t be having a foal for you (still not considering ET?) but glad she has a good place and you have a good babysitter.
Thank you! I may have one “hail Mary” option for Carina up my sleeve; I’ll know more about that in a few days. But, no, I’m not in a financial position to try an ET this year with anyone. I hope I can do one with Sydney next year, if the stars align, though.
You and your vets have done an amazing job with him! Congratulations!
Lyra foaled! She had a tall bay colt last night at 11:09. Labor was fast, she went from water breaking to baby out in ten minutes. Which was a relief after the problems last year. He stood at 30 minutes, shortly after she passed the placenta. So basically everything as textbook as possible, for once. They both passed the vet check up at 12 hours with flying colors. I’m beyond pleased with this little guy and with how good of a mom Lyra is being. He’s been spunky but friendly since before he got up and has definite opinions on the world already.
Congratulations!
Congratulations! He’s beautiful!
Congratulations! What a cutie!
