For someone with a head shaker - ITEMS CLAIMED, thanks

Hi friends.

We had to put down our sweet, grumpy 26yo gelding last week. His years-long head shaking could no longer be controlled and he was chronically uncomfortable and dispirited. Oof, no fun.

Regardless, I have most of a canister of the Platinum Performance head shaking formula, plus most of a canister of cyproheptadine left over. I’m happy to donate it by mail to someone who could use it. My vet here doesn’t have any other client with that need.

I’m sorry for your loss. For years I owned a photic head shaker, not an easy thing to deal with at all. Godspeed to your boy.

Ah, thanks so much @cayuse. It’s a weird and confounding disorder indeed. Ours was a photic shaker and we live in the desert. Not much we could do about the dang sun, other than offer deep shade, which we did. He developed it about three years ago, and it seemed to happen all at once one day. On a bright afternoon I took off his fly mask to go rinse off some dried mud and the horse jumped like he’d been hit by lightning, then he ran off and hid in the shade of the barn. He was never the same afterward.

Very frustrating all around, though he’s at peace now and we are as well.

My mare was photic too. From the start of April to the end of October. It started the same way with her, she was fine one day and shaking the next. We tried everything. The only thing that helped was a mask. Your boy was lucky to have you, someone who understood.

So very sorry for your loss. I am sure someone will benefit from the supplements to help their horse. Check with rescues too if someone doesn’t step up that needs it. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

I wonder if head shaking is becoming a more common ailment or if it’s always been around. I don’t remember seeing any head shakers back in the day.
