For the french.... WEG improvements for 2014 (yes, Normandy is in France... P3...)

Paraequestrian

I spent my days watching the paraequestrian, which was included in the games for the first time this year. The crowd was thin even though the venue (the old indoor) was easy to get to. In hindsight, I wish this competition had free entry so that people could have come and gone without shelling out $25/30. I think easier access now or in Normandy could help build interest in this sport for the future.

The venue was “sold out” as the sponsors had all the tickets. I was pretty angry about this as the public should have had better access to watch the para riders and to give them an audience.

well, buying daily sheets for 2 bucks a pop is all well and good if you are there every day. I wasn’t, only there during driving events. So I have no knowledge of who the other competitors were in the other events. I’m just saying that the souvenir program would have been nicer if it had just listed the names of the event competitors so they were all in one place.

They could have printed the nominated entries (here are the FEI biographies), but in many cases the final entries were not determined until shortly before the competition date. (For example, the First Horse Inspection for Driving was not until Wed 10/6)

Good luck with that!

I don’t think Dr. Lyons plunked down $10M+ in title sponsorship to let a competitor in the door.
Yes, hence the annoying Adequan plane with the bottomless gas tank endlessly circling the stadium. I heard -just rumour- that Alltech has a competing product and Adequan was shut out.

umm. Dunno why the OP is asking the French to “take note”, the next WEG isn’t in France.
Trust me, the Brits may not historically love the French, but we do know roughly where they are - know thine enemies and all!

WOW, if you’re going to post one single time you might as well think twice about what you’re going to post

I have a feeling we won’t be seeing this poster again

Oh, come on. Not many people make such a big splash on the first post.

You heard correctly. He even tried to get that plane out of the sky, but they had filed all the correct permits so FAA said… sorry.

Wow, now that we are into all the European history that might explain Fuego’s lower score. Maybe the Germans are still mad at the Hapsburgs for dragging them into WWI. The Belgians and Dutch are still PO’d at being the path to Paris and the Spainish are still miffed about the Spanish Riding School being in Vienna.

Why should they be mad about that? Isn’t Vienna in Spain?

I was surprised there was no “app for that.”

So many people walking around the KHP with their smartphones: If the WEG really wanted to send a “green” message, why did they not create an app that would have allowed people to access the entries and results on their smartphones, which would have cut down on the need for printed sheets?
They made a “countdown to WEG” app which seemed pretty pointless, just a timer that ended at the opening ceremonies. I had hoped that in fact it would have daily schedules and the like.

I did pull the x-c order of go PDF from the WEG website, and had it on my iPhone. Very handy.

So apparently there were schedules in the program… but the program was $15 and worse, it was very thick, since it covered everything. I declined to buy it just because it looked too heavy to carry all day every day, and from a casual perusal, it didn’t seem as useful as apparently it was.

Well, at the rate technology is advancing, by the time four years have elapsed, we’ll probably have chips in our heads at the next WEG to provide all that useful information.

;);) thank you for making the French look like Geography buffs… lol

They had three beers available; Kentucky Ale, Kentucky Light, and Kentucky Bourbon Beer (which was the only ‘bourbon’ based one)…the other two were head and shoulders over Bud. I’m just annoyed that I can’t buy any of them in Michigan and forgot to buy some to take home. Guess I’ll have to plan a beer trip to Kentucky!

There were the Daily Sheets for each discipline, showing the previous day’s results and the event line-up for the day. I only got the ones for dressage and eventing, but they had all the up-to-the-moment competitors with exact times for each. You bought them at the same place they sold the programs, as soon as you came in the gate. The days I was there, they were available each morning.
They definitely didn’t have the daily sheets every day. The day of the SJ Speed Competitions (Oct 4), they didn’t have any daily sheets. I talked to the British people who headed the programmes/dailies and they said that someone botched up the order and they didn’t get printed. Really disappointed about that.

Remember that Normandy was ruled by Britain until King John got beat out of it, and Calais was British until Queen Bloody Mary. The Normans were Norsemen, and never Frankish.

Might be some really OLD history going on there.

One more thought for Normandy:

My program had a page for autographs, and I did manage to cop two or three out of sheer luck, but it would be SOOOOO great if there were scheduled sessions for autographs.

It could even be one big session, or one after each discipline, with some sort of charity connection to sweeten the deal for the riders.
I totally agree with you about having an autograph session. At Arlington Racetrack in Chicago, they had a whole bunch of famous jockeys signing autographs and the money went to the disabled jockeys fund. I stumbled upon a Laura Kraut autograph signing, but that was it. So nosy, but whose autographs did you get?

The website had a mobile version, which I used liberally throughout the Games. So liberally, in fact, that I ran my battery out both days! Unfortunately the live results were…wrong. They were adding up the eventing scores wrong and didn’t note eliminations, among other things. Still, the orders-of-go were UTD, though I liked having the physical version in the form of the daily sheet (especially once my phone died… ;)).
