For the Frugal Foxhunter
I found some Tattersall wool and made one but have been searching for some canary wool and could only find it if I bought a whole bolt at $8.00 a yard. It took a bit of trial and error but I have a beautiful burgundy with navy and cream check vest now.
I found some at G Street fabrics near Rockville, MD but it was a very light, stretchy gabardine that frayed like crazy. Not fun to work with but I did make a decent vest. I would love to find some thicker stuff.

The OP mentioned finding rust breeches for very little $. Where??? I have been searching for inexpensive rust breeches for a long time with no luck. I too am a very frugal foxhunter; I ride a cheap horse, buy most items used or at thrift shops, etc, and I cannot afford to spend $100+ on breeches. Where do you all find the rust ones - cheap???
Ebay. Brown field boots can be found cheap there too. Secret to boots is to search womens boots instead of riding boots. Takes a while going thru thousands of pictures but I just got a like new vintage pair for $15.00

I’ve been looking for a pair of brown boots on Ebay but it seems that they are all fashion boots. I’ve inquired on a few but they have definitely not been riding boots. Did you get a pair that are really more geared to fashion with the expectation they won’t last? I really cannot even begin to bring myself to plunk down the cash for custom boots (and I do love my husband and want to stay married, LOL)

There’s a pair from Beval Saddlery listed on eBay for about $75 + shipping. Can’t remember the size, but they’re listed under women’s boots.

I was bored so thought I’d sift through eBay’s listings. Glad they’ll work for you! There’s a few black “vintage” tall boots listed too.

I also found(and bought) a brand new pair of $1,500.00 custom boots for less than $100 that were sadly too tall for me but listed properly resold for 5X what I paid for them. It takes a bit of time but the deals are there. What size are you looking for? If I see any in my searching I will let you know. NVM saw you found some

Theres a pair of 26’s on one of the FB links I posted. New, with tags $35.

I also have a friend who has informed me a tack shop is closing and has a ton of old school 2-way stretch Tailored Sportsmans canary and rust. I’m still trying to find out details, but think they are very cheap ($25???), I will try to see what sizes they have.

I’ve had very good luck finding boots on eBay, but it does require patience. As for rust breeches, it appears that everyone who has a pair for sale wears (or wore  ) a size 26. Unfortunately, I can’t fit into that size, but I will continue the search!

This has been a great thread to read! I’m new to hunting, and have found a hunt that is semi close that fits my personality and wants. Very low key small hunt that just goes out and has fun. I plan on joining next year.

I’m an eventer by default and am trying to find things cheaply as I can. And have been lucky enough to be able to borrow a coat to finish out the season.

I joined the FB groups that ISR posted (thanks). I’ve been keeping my eyes out for a pair of rust breeches…

For the first several years that I hunted I wore a mens yellow cashmere V-neck sweater vest that I found at a thrift store for a couple of dollars.

We have a TB field hunter at a frugal price. He can’t be found on Ebay though

I wear a yellow v-neck sweater under my hunt coat right now. When my coat is on, it looks more or less like a vest and has the added bonus of keeping me very warm!

You can also scour Etsy…found some jackets & breeches there.

As for that breeches, just bought a pair for $30 on eBay  arrived today & I haven’t even tried them on yet.

This is a very useful thread, especially for the new foxhunter! Thanks for starting this, OP!

OK guys I’ve gone a little crazy in the last two days! Found some fabulous deals in the non-equestrian sections of ebay. Besides the brown Beval boots, I have bought a tweed Brittany hacking jacket for $10.50, a Pytchley coat for $17, and get this, a Harry Hall scarlet melton for $75!! It was listed in the army section as a 1950’s Civil War coat but it was clearly a hunting coat. I may never wear it, but at that price I couldn’t pass it up. I may hang on to it for awhile and then resell it. I also got some killer deals in the equestrian section - a pair of Harry Hall rust breeches for $5.50, and another pair of Equi-Stretch rust breeches for ONE DOLLAR. Plus maybe another $30 total in shipping for all the stuff above. I am watching a very nice yellow plaid wool vest. I need to step away from ebay!

I am new to COTH but not new to fox hunting. As a teenager I hunted with Rose Tree Hunt Club in Rose Tree, near Media, Pennsylvania. I hope to eventually get back to hunting.

Fox hunting is not an inexpensive pursuit (pun, groan). One place to start is to order, thru the COTH website, RIDING TO HOUNDS IN AMERICA - An Introduction for Fox Hunters by William P. Wadsworth, MFH that was published by The Chronicle in 1987. After reading this booklet, reading this
and other COTH threads, asking questions and sharing ideas, you CAN significantly reduce your costs, particularly by avoiding some of the good in theory but bad in practice ideas that come up.

Good Luck to all those that can hunt, weather permitting. Also, Good Luck to those who are not currently so fortunate.

This seller has a bunch of vintage hunt boots that seem to be in good condition. I’m sharing the link to just one here, but you can search the seller’s other listings to see the rest:

Just FYI, when I’ve bought vintage boots I’ve found they tend to run narrower than today’s boots.

You guys make this sound so much fun but the idea of hunting terrifies me. I love watching videos on you tube but oh god.
