FORGET THE GOLDFISH!!!!!!!!!

It’s kind of funny because if you went to an aquarium forum and talked about your plan to dump a bunch of goldfish into a horse trough, you’d be strung up to dry. Just like you would freak if somebody said she was buying a pony and tying it to the tree in the backyard for the grandkid. I owned Ryukins and Shubunkins since I was about 12 and later bred show quality fish so I guess I look at fish a little differently than some people here.

But whatever, carry on.

Seriously, how is buying a couple of goldfish out of a feeder tank at the pet store where there are about a million fish to the gallon and then putting it in a huge tank akin to tying a pony to a tree??? That doesn’t even make sense. I guess those fish would be much happier when someone buys them to feed to their turtle???
Really, I don’t have goldfish in my trough but I do happen to have common sense.

PS- In case you decide I’m some kind of crazy fish hater, I do have a large tank of tropicals and a salt water as well in my house.

LOL!

I do believe PETA has officially changed all fishes names to “sea kittens” to make them sound more “cuddly”. YEAH!!!

I think I am going to explore the whole fishes in the tank thing. The only problem I will have - keeping my children out of the tank! ( But it may get me off the hook for redoing the fish tank in the house!)
My daughter, alas, loves to go “swimming” in the tank. The fish make it twice as fun, apparently.

People show fish?

I have to say that the goldfish in our tank are some of the biggest, healthiest goldfish I have ever seen. Way happier than any fish in a bowl or tank.

And, since most of them came to us from one of those “throw a ping pong ball into a bowl and win a fish” games, they got luckier than I expect most of their brethren did.

My word. They really do.

http://www.fbas.co.uk/Fish%20Shows.html

As cute as Goldfish are I think they are pretty dirty. What about the ammonia they add to the water? If I am not mistaken they can also host parasites like flukes.
Well, personally, I don’t think the goldfish I used to have were abused enough. So whenever I thought they were looking a little too full of themselves, I took them out of the tank and beat them. Then I put them back. If they really thought it was that bad, wouldn’t they have left me? I had those suckers for years.

Thanks Seven.
I told my school about you (you know to let them know how good they have it) and they backed away from me like I was tainted.

Apparantly the fish network knows about you.

That or I just didn’t have food for them.

Oh yes.
In fact my signature fish(koi) came off a plane from Japan I could sell him for around $400. right now and he is an average looking koi.

The serious collectors make trips to the ponds in Japan (Although there are contenders coming from Isrial, Germany and the US - Not Australia though- koi are illegal* there but some koi can be found passing themselves off as ‘goldfish’ never seen a 3’ goldfish but if you go to buildings with secret ponds you will find them ) and there is an entire ritual to viewing ponds in Japan for a potential purchase prospect. They drop mid to high five figures for the right fish (Yes, for a fish). They are judged on color, balance of markings, shape and a serene attitude in the blue show tanks.

It takes all kinds.

Thanks Seven. (sarcasem)

 • I can’t blame the gov’t for this one. A non native fish, dog rabbit can do so much damage…well ask n aussie. IMHO Pets are fine - just don’t set them ‘free’ when you are tired of them - it ‘never’ turns out well.

Well put. I also torture and abuse fish in my private residence. I once was hired for a period of years by an aquarium to torture their finned inhabitants. I did horrifying things, like preparing their food twice daily and feeding them by hand. Keeping a daily record of their habits and cleaning their “enclosures”. I can barely sleep now just thinking about it…the HORROR! :teehee:

…little tip if you are going to keep goldfish in your stone trough or other water source; Don’t let horses that have recently been wormed drink from it, this results in dead goldfish.
Aha! I wondered why my little fishies which had overwintered just fine in the heated stock tank suddenly stopped swimming, then … stopped. I was even feeding them fish food fortified with Vit. C.

Could deworming be considered to be bot-larva-tapeworm-etc. abuse?

This thread just keeps getting better!!

 My cistern koi could actually be worth some $? Who knew? However, I’m pretty sure he’s domestic, not one of those imported warmblood koi, so he’s probably the koi equivalent of a low-end auction horse. Are the imported koi branded? If not, how do you tell the difference? My koi looks like a WB, he is big with a lot of bone…But I know, I know, those American Koi registries will take any old koi and it doesn’t make him a real warmblood, right? Oh, and of course, he’s been abused, so he may need a little time at the trainer’s before he’s ready for the shows. Would this be a violation of the COTH pricing thread rules if I asked how much he’s worth? I’m NOT advertising, this koi is not for sale…Just hypothetical…But you can send me a PM if you are shopping for a koi like mine so I’ll know how to price him hypothetically.

Well Vandy, your local yokel koi may look like an import, but what about his deportment?
From the fish-showing website: “The nature of the fish will be considered, that it is fearless…”

Better send it to the trainer’s for some join-up. It needs to be fearless!

Vandy, what ever you do, DON’T ship that fish. When they lay over, someone might like the looks of him and keep him for themselves. He’ll never make it where he is suppose to go!
Goldfish abuse, well, there you have it.:eek::eek: I won’t tell them they are abused if you don’t. My tanks do better with fish in them. Don’t care about the why. I don’t have any right now because the dog splashed them all out when he dives in and out of the troughs. Now, that was goldfish abuse, or a carnival ride, depends on your perspective.;)
I didn’t finish the thread yet but I’m getting strange looks from co-workers since I’m HOWLING in laughter over goldfish abuse.

Goldfish abuse… then I am the mother of “Goldfish’s Satan”. Have many tanks of hells managed by my children.

Maybe DNA tested at the upper levels but I think the judges can look at a fish and have a pretty good idea of which pond it came from.
Don’t give up hope the French vintners sneered at California wines for a century until there was a blind taste in 1976
Anyhow just being imported doesn’t mean better. I bought Gari Baldy** as a weanling (Three inch fry in the fall when they cull the ponds and while he had the whitest fins and the most golden color he is a jerk! He elbows my shubunkin and sarasa comets out of the way like a fat slob at a buffet does a twelve year old when they bring out a fresh tray of crab legs.) Paying a lot doesn’t mean good. There is a reason the serious Koi Kichi buyers hop on a plane to japan to buy (there is an entire polite ritual to buying the perfect fish and I will never be in that league - Although I could see trading a custom carved western saddle or 1950s chevy for an international level fish.)

Oh, and of course, he’s been abused, so he may need a little time at the trainer’s before he’s ready for the shows.

You know a trainer?!! Who? I’ve just been winging it and Gari has my number take the food run away, beat up the goldies like Fru Fru the bunny did with the field mice.

Would this be a violation of the COTH pricing thread rules if I asked how much he’s worth?

That question is useless without Pics (I had an animated avatar with that but I can’t find it)

Yes They do. Take it as a given that a fish out of a tank has a slight parasite load and you would treat it for parasites right afterwards.
Would you buy a horse out of pasture and not worm it?

I was told once that the reason my fish aren’t as pretty as the fish in the book is the fish in the book are show winners. Like looking at a picture of Big Ben and being told he was the standard jumper.

I’m like 8K down and this all started september before last with a 12 cent fish!!!
Don’t go there.

** The Garibaldi is the Calif state fish and Gari (the jerk) was also that color when I bought him. Right now he is the color of a double eagle or Krugerrand but he is getting sunburned and developing white spots on his head - (do they sell the little funnel shaped rice straw hats gardeners hats in fish size? Gari will demand a little pickup truck with hoses rakes and hoes If I know him) for from the new outdoors pond. (if It’s not one problem its another- high ph in the new unestablished pond for one fish people can you use lemon juice (I have a tree and the juice is free- besides they give koi oranges for color right?) rather than the sulfuric for stabilization? Seems safer but they don’t sell it in the stores for that purpose so there might be a reason other than the stability of the juice.

My all time favorite small animal vet did fish surgery from time to time, as well as snakes, birds, lizards and your basic cats and dogs. I got a whole education from her about yes indeed, there were fish valuable enough to warrant anesthesia and surgery.

Whenever I feel a human doctor has gotten a little too far along on the pity train, I like to tell them about her and ask them how often they’ve done surgery on more than one class or order in the biological taxonomy in a single day.

Holy crap… I need new underwear.

Freaking hilarious- thank you

I’m trying to imagine what fish people think of horse shows…

“But, you mean…color DOESN’T matter??”
