Foxhunting a QH

As long as she doesn’t strongly gait…
SLW-
TWP is the one who insists I accompany her and vice versa when outside, such as checking the mail, walking up the hill, and helping her close the gate to keep the Bay Mafia out.
I should pop her over a few cross rails and see what happens.
How cute!!! I was just at a clinic where a woman had a black and white pinto TWP!!! It gaited a bit, though.

My friend has a gaited Morgan , but the mare WTCs too…the problem is when she started her jumping, and the mare was green…she’d ‘shuffle/mix’ right before the jump if she was insecure or didn’t know how to find the right spot.

So even if approachign the jump at a trot or canter, I saw that when she was in an “iffy” spot…and didn’t meet the jump perfectly, she’d through in some wierd gait at the last stride or so!?

Just something to consider if you are used to a nice rhythmic canter or even trot approach. That shuffle/mix gait at the last second can be a little “off-kilter”

FWIW- my friend’s mare was super game. She could do ANYTHING!

Here’s a Blue Roan QH foxhunting!
Hey COTHERS! I was invited on a local fox hunt last week, as the season was extended. So I took my QH, thinking it would help him get fit, etc… for eventing b/c that’s his job. I had a great time, although the beginning seemed like a chinese firedrill (controlled chaos). My boy kept up, no question about him being fit, and had a great time. So I’m wondering, my horse received a lot of strange looks, I felt like he was being scrutinized. Little do they know he’s like riding a sports car and he jumps, although we did non-jumpers. Is there a prejudice against QH’s in the hunt field or was it just me imagining things in a new environment?
Here’s a lovely blue roan quarter horse out foxhunting. He’s a GREAT horse, too! I don’t think you’d stand out at all…maybe imagining something?

QH and Eventers

You go girl! In our Hunt we love to see Eventers out hunting with us. They ususally show up with a “can do!” attitude and a big smile. The smile is usually even bigger at the end of the day! Their horses are usually well mannered and quite brave. What a great combination.

There are several QHs in our Hunt, including mine. My guy has a quite mind, an athletic body, and he pulls me to the trailer on hunt mornings. Who could ask for anything more.

Keep Hunting!

Do not need blue roan quarter horse. Do not need blue roan quarter horse. Do not need blue roan quarter horse. Do not need blue roan quarter horse.

Thanks, Fancy That for the info. Will put DH on the sidelines watching for “shuffles”. I’ll just put a box of Peeps on the other side of the crossrail-that should motivate her.

Hey! That’s MY blue roan QH!

Well…see there…we stood out so much I was found even out here in cyberland. Yep, that’s my boy!

Hey ‘Fancy That’ - beautiful blue roan QH. My boy is quite flashy, he’s a reg paint and reg QH, and quite brave. I’m sure they were admiring his beauty like your horse.

Thank you. You all sound like very polite riders.

I certainly will try it again

I hunt and have hunted many QHs.
I want to also say that yes, most first timers don’t realize everything going on with the hounds, so often start chatting when we are listening carefully. I also think that so many people expect fox hunters to be snotty that anything we do is perceived as such.
The best thing to do is to listen and learn and it will be even more fun.

Yes you do, yes you do, Yes you do.

Was that helpful?

There are very few TB’s in our hunt. There are many QH’s, many draft crosses, a few PMU rescue horses, at least three TWH’s, a standard-bred and a few lovely warm bloods. As long as your horse is well behaved and well turned out, no one cares. Also I believe every hunt has some COBs (crusty old bastards). They make me laugh!

That’s great Ponyclubrocks!!! COBs - good one

That’s “Big Belgians’” lovely blue roan QH!

Compliments on the beautiful blue roan QH goes to Big Belgian, who I knew as “Foxhunter” on another board

The funny thing is that her handle here is Big Belgian, and I’m the one that has a Big Belgian!! hehehee (well, he’s my husband’s horse…my riding horse is a Morgan)

Here’s my BIG BELGIAN

OMG!! I’m confused…no, I’m really not.

You all sound like a lot of fun. Too bad you’re out in CA!

keeping an eye on the noob

I remember my first hunt, down the road from the kennels and over a series of jumps where a pipeline easement crosses a succession of cow pastures.
I was on a tall QH and I only got schussed once. [My excitement was noisy]

hunting is a cooperative endevor and since everyone’s safety is dependant on everyone else, then keeping an eye on a guest is important.

once in my first or second season a senior member asked if I wanted to do the next jump as a pair [and I not knowing any better did, but it seems foolish in retrospect]

a pic of the QH

I can resist…I think…

Fancy That!!! your belgian - He looks like a wild one!! And have you ever seen a cuter, happier rider??? I hate you and hope you fall off…:wink:

And I don’t need anymore qh’s, not no crosses, no cute little ears…no big jowls…no cute heads…not no smartee pants qh’s at all…nope, not me.:sigh::uhoh: And just because I can do everything with them isn’t a good excuse either. So don’t try that one on me either. I can resist! I am strong…

Oh, good. I was looking at those pictures thinking, “Boy, that horse and rider combo looks really familiar.”

Gee, thanks A LOT Showhorse!:D:lol:

The problem is, we have four horses-well, 3 and 1 pony, and I imagine DH would roll his eyes and say, “What’s one more?” .

Thanks, WG!!! I stole the Belgian for a trail ride that day…he is such a great horse. yeah - super wild…ha, yeah right! :0

As for me and my riding …well, I’m always happy when out having FUN RIDING! Here’s what I normally look like - yes, smiling again, on my normal mount (the Morgan)

You really need to get a big-cheeked, big-butted, foxy-eared, cutie-pie QH. I’m an enabler…

already enabled!

OMG!! STILL with the cute horse and fabulous smile! Ease up on us Fancy That for cryin’ out loud! And now I REALLY hate you and hope you fall off…I mean really, really!!!

Oh and I got “enabled” years ago.
I have 3 qh/perch crosses out in the field. They look more qh than perch surprisingly. Like big boned qh’s.

I do not need another horse I do not need another horse I do not need another horse…besides, I’d feel like a midget on a big Belgian no matter how cute he is. (Yeah, the roan is cute, but…BELGIAN!)

I wonder if I could get a Halflinger to jump…

Danceronice-
The man we bought our TWHs from has Haffies. Beautiful, beautiful Haffies. He drives them. Unfortunately, when we were out looking at the TWHs, no Haffies were for sale.
