Freezing (chicken) Eggs

They can go straight in the fridge unwashed :slight_smile: You’d just wash them right before you use them, always with hot water. What you don’t want to do is fridge them and then let them sit out, they’ll get condensation and the bacteria can move through the shell. I put all my eggs straight in the fridge every afternoon when I collect them, it extends their life.

Personally, I do wash the super grimy ones right way, when it’s muddy or when someone snuck a :poop: into the nestbox that I didn’t catch.

Can you put the extra eggs in a cooler at the end of your driveway with an honor system to purchase the eggs? I am not sure what egg prices are in your neck of the woods, I am paying $5 for a dozen of farm fresh eggs currently. (in North Central Pa).

Get a QR code to display so people can use paypal or venmo via their phone, and have a little locked cash box with a slot to drop bills/coins in.

This image shows the QR code. it does not have to be fancy. just easy for people to pay you.

If I was near you I would pick up a dozen a week. I love eggs and I can’t have chickens due to too many predators.

@hoopoe Giveaway worked, but now most of the people I know have chickens, so… :roll_eyes:

@trubandloki Drat!

@OzarksRider How many dozen & how many months?
At the current rate, I’m getting a dozen around every 3 days.
Like @Mosey_2003, I wipe any dirt/poo off eggs with a damp paper towel.
Once I have a dozen sitting on my counter, I add a whole egg to the chickens’ breffy oatmeal (= calcium & protein) & eat them myself every couple days.
So not a meaningful surplus for donation or the Honor Box @MunchingonHay & pantries have to be aware of food safety for clients. I volunteered for 20+yrs at one.
I’d give eggs to clients I knew personally, as a gift from me, not the organization.

I do thaw them. I’ve never noticed any texture issues or anything but then I like my eggs scrambled

Last winter I think I had 9-10 dozen eggs in the fridge late in the fall. My 4 hens started laying again in early March, so those eggs lasted 4-5 months. And I had a couple dozen still in the fridge this spring.

you can ‘waterglass’ clean, unwashed eggs.
Put them in a saturated solution of pickling lime. They keep for months. I didn’t know about that until a couple of years ago, a chance post on my FB feed.

Interesting, I might look into that…
