Be careful with heat tape, a big barn up here in CT lost 20 something horses the other year in a barn fire. The cause was a short section of heat tape on a hose.
Simkie, good to know that Woodfords still rock! I’ve got a full replacement, just came the other day waiting to go in for my hydrant. The plunger/valve at the bottom of the old one died in situ so I can’t just pull it to repair it. And I figured if I am doing that, might as well redo the whole thing as it is 40 plus years old! Thankfully I don’t have to dig to get at it, just properly ventilate the well pit (14 feet deep concrete pit, can any one say 'Enclosed Space!), which is easier if scarier.
Good to know. I was contemplating the same thing. I just bought the repair kit for my Campbell AGAIN for the third time. The last packing nut didn’t last a day before it was spraying again. Had to tighten the packing nut every day. I’m so done with this garbage.
Ordering a Woodford! Which one did you get? They look complicated.
Thanks clanter. That looks like a promising solution.
The Iowa. They’re really not at all complicated–hardest part is digging the hole. Pull off that piece of shit Campbell (I feel your pain!!) and pop on the Woodford. Confirm no leaks, backfill the hole, tamping as you go, and TADA! your spigot will not spew water everywhere every time you turn it on. Woooo!
(Confirm your bury depth before ordering, either by digging up what you have or pulling the stem out and measuring.)
Good idea about measuring the stem! I checked True Value today and they only had the Campbells.
Yeah, you’ll likely have to order. Use the link I included above. Or your local Lowe’s might have what you need.
@gypsymare - if you are not in a time crunch, True Value will ship a Woodford to your local store for free -
