My apologies for bringing up an older thread, but I am starting to research this topic and I had a few questions. I thought it would be best to attach them to this existing thread.

Thanks for the kind words, rodawn, but a couple corrections :). We don’t sell anything. One of the company that does sponsor our website and short courses is www.sementanks.com - and they “do” sell nitrogen tanks. They are, as Home Again noted, probably the least expensive retailer of MVE tanks out there. As you have noted, there definitely is a difference in quality and for the sake of $100, I’d go with quality over price as well ;).
The website listed mentions “working duration days”. Does that mean how often the tanks needs to be refilled with liquid nitrogen? Also, from your experience, what model of storage tanks would have better quality? For my operation, I would definitely be considered “small”, but like everyone, I don’t want to risk my inventory. Would the Millenium be satisfactory?

Thanks so much!

It is basically an estimate in how long the tank will hold. If you are in and out of the tanks repeatedly, you will burn off more nitrogen. And, the number of straws you have in the tank will also impact the holding time of the tank. We would never, ever leave a tank without filling it for the “duration” time. Our tanks are checked/dipped weekly, have alarms on all of them and are filled usually once every two to three weeks.

We prefer MVE or Taylor Wharton tanks. The size of the tank will depend entirely on how many doses of semen you plan on storing. The specs will usually have how many straws a tank will hold, but also remember, chances are those numbers are “loose” straws and not straws that are stored in canes. Make sense?

Hope that helps!

Thank you Kathy. That makes sense. I’m wondering if purchasing a tank might be a bit overkill… Ideally I would like to have a couple of doses from several different stallions. Probably no more than 20 doses. I may research if it would be more practical to find and pay someone to store my doses for me.

Alexandra, I have two of the MVE tanks — 1 20/20 and 1 Millenium. Both have served me well.
Ditto on the MVE tanks… They have worked well and my vet also has the same kind.
