Which frozen show-jumping stallions (decent quality semen) would you consider “Modernizing” stallions that will add length of leg and lighten a sausage shaped mare?
I am lookin at Kannan for similar results. PatO

Excellent suggestion IMHO. There is a thread somewhere in this forum about Quinar and what a lovely horse he is… IIRC, a few board members have some of his progeny that are really typey and lovely. I’ll see if I can find it…

On Kannan’s site: Because of his size and strength, he is well suited to small to medium weight mares, who lack size, scope and power. His nature, character and mouth can be used on most mares. Heavy and plain mares should be avoided.
All of the Kannans that I rode when I was in Europe were definitely been plain, a bit chunky, and not had the pretties conformation (slightly shorter necks, plain heads, slightly flat in the croup in some) but… they had fantastic rideability and temperaments and were tall. The above description of what mares to use with Kannan is definitely a good one. Below is a photograph of one of the 6 year old stallions by Kannan.
Balou du Rouet! My filly this year by him went Premium AND Foal of Distinction and the inspectors went on and on about what a modern filly she was. And his semen is SUPER quality. My maiden took first try and the vet was extremely impressed with the swimmers.
Well, I have chosen Quinar for my Kannan mare, she is about 7+ month along. I like her very much, I can’t comment about her rideability, but she is certainly easy to deal with on the ground. She is about 16.1 hands, solidly built but well proportioned. She is feminine but could have a prettier head. She is not as modern as what some may look for, but certainly a strong and powerful mare. She earned the Star predicate this summer at the KWPN Keuring I presented her at. I was looking to modernize her, so I’m eager to see how this cross works.

Baltic VDL was suggested to me for her at the Keuring, who, also descends from QDR.

"I don’t think there is a widely accepted definition. I find for myself it is best to not expand on the definitions too much, keep it simple. IMHO, Refining is lightening of bone and body and head. This is usually accomplished by adding blood, so when you refine, you add blood.Modernizing can come from a non-blooded stallion. This tends to be slighly shorter backs, smaller frames and longer legs. Old type tends to be heavier, longer bodies with shorter legs. Some stallions do both. You can generally look to your younger stallions for modernizing, Cormint, Acodetto, Diarado, Casall la Silla, Cassiano, Casiro, Quinar I etc. These stallions are not necessarily refining or blooded(exception Quinar). Some exceptions to the young stallions are Coriano, Limbus, and Lavall I. Refining stallions are like Larimar, Quinar, Clearway, Linaro, Lord, Lavaletto, Cardento, and Lavall I. These stallions bring blood, and lighten with out(exceptions apply) reducing the overall ground coverage.
So my Calando I mare is 16.3, always makes bigger, and sometimes too big. I need more modern, becuase she can’t handle anymoreblood, and doesn’t need refinement. She is elegent, femanine with long legs. She has a very long back, and can breed with a heavy body. So I breed her to today’s young stallions to get modern, without adding blood.
I think tomorrow’s horses will be smaller, shorter and quicker. I think the ring is supporting this type of horse.
