Frustrating Movie Moments For Horse People

When it’s not Andlusians in Spaghetti westerns, it’s Friesians in EVERYTHING! That’s fine when appropriate, as in Ladyhawke; but, really, a Friesian as Bucephalus (in Alexander)? Yeah, a black light draft/coach horse would be my choice to traverse half the known world, across deserts, to India and back. Not.

It’s surely obvious to any horse person that the horse used in the galloping about on the desert island scenes of the Black Stallion is an Arabian, while the one used in all the racing scenes is a thoroughbred.

Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron has eyebrows.

What gets me is that I remember when this movie came out, they made a big deal about how the animators studied actual horses to determine veracity of how they moved, etc. Did NO ONE NOTICE that horses DON’T HAVE EYEBROWS? Geesh.

Hahaha! Love RedHeads - I recently learned that Disney animators often give eyebrows to animated animals (that don’t have eyebrows in real life) in order to accommodate a greater range of facial expressions. Watch finding Dori. LOL Fish DON’T HAVE EYEBROWS! But they do in that movie.

Belowthesalt - OMG you are so right about Friesians. I went to the theater last night and saw War for the Planet of the Apes. Guess what Caesar and company were riding? Friesians!! Also, while I enjoyed the movie in every respect, I just couldn’t get past a 400 pound silverback gorilla riding a relatively small horse. Really? You are going to stick that kind of weight on a 15 hand horse? Sigh. Much as I love the franchise, that really took me out of the fantasy more than once.

Sorry, bumping this up because I had to add this one! DH and I watched The Mummy last night (the new one). At the end of the movie, Tom Cruise is in Egypt or Iraq (don’t remember which but definitely a desert) and he is riding a FRIESIAN. I had a conniption. Can you imagine a horse less suited to hard riding in the desert? DH thinks it’s hilarious that I notice stuff like this, and care so much.

My non-horsey sister was offended that the horses in Spirit LAPPED up water when they drank.

I was so amused at how disgusted she was that I couldn’t even be annoyed by it.
