Fugly stage at 2 3/4 years old? Tell me that this too shall pass!

Dr.D ~ an easy peasy ‘fix’ here !

Just send dear [B]ELLA to me !!!

Nice try, Zu Zu

Corny though it is, she is my heart horse; I did “design her” and plan for her (like the Titanic, I feel like she was “willed into solid existence”), and even though like every other horse, she’s imperfect, she’s perfect to me

That said, if circumstances were to change, I know you would be the best possible caring home (for any horse!), and I wouldn’t hesitate to trust you.

This is a topic on a Dutch forum where people posted pictures of horses when they were foals, then for example when they were yearlings and then as three year olds or older.

This is my guy at the age of one year and three months:

I am hoping that he will get back some of that elegance he had at that time.

Elles–what an interesting link! A lot of dramatic changes (over time) in many of the foals pictured, but then again there were some Friesians, ponies, and light draft breeds represented

Your boy is lovely, what a booty on him! That was definitely not an “ugly stage”…Some horses grow different body parts at different stages of development (obviously), but I think the “general rule” is probably pretty accurate, at least when it comes to looking at them at three MONTHS to ascertain general conformation. Some foals haven’t unfolded by 3 days, or are still a little wonky at 3 weeks; so maybe we should just keep looking at the pics of them taken at 3 months, and trust that they will eventually “finish” as a larger and more substantial version of the baby at that age and stage–if we can just remain patient.

I have a picture of my filly taken at her inspection where she looks just lovely (it hangs on the wall, and I’m looking at it right now); she was 2 1/2 months old at the time, so my hope is that the finished product will be just an “age progressed version” of that pretty girl.

Just waiting on those withers…

I don’t have any good “ugly stage” pics of my guy as I tried to avoid having records of those phases but I can tell you he grew and changed a lot during his 3 year old year.

Your horse looks lovely. What’s his breeding?

Elles, your horse doesn’t look fugly to me.

Is he on any Omega3s, perchance?

Thank you for your encouraging words, Grayarabpony.
Did you also see the other pictures of him? To my my eye he still looks like a two year old and not like an almost mature three year old.
No, he is not on Omega3s. May I ask you why you think he might be?

To me he looks like a very well built 3 year old. From the pictures you posted he looks much more mature than my guy did at that age. My horse was gelded at 9 months (he was a June baby and I wanted him gelded before the flies got bad) and when he was 3 he did truly look like he was 2. Also sent you a PM.

He will likely look small compared to warmbloods once gelded, although there are TBs built like tanks too. lol My mare needed work and a ton of forage to keep well-muscled – otherwise people mistook her for a youngster. Although as I say your horse looks good to me as he is.
