I feed flax all year, it’s commonly in the 90’s through summer. What I find is the humidity tends to mold it very fast if it’s too humid.
TC makes a stabilized ground flax that will keep as well as anything else you’d feed.
Thank you, but I think you miss read things. There is no RB or vit/min that I can feed my horses. Haven’t found any RB that is free from soy, corn, wheat, rice & barley, since all of those will make my youngest mare’s lips swell up. HorseTech’s High Point Grass pellet was good for a while, until they suddenly added wheat to it and my sensitive mare had lip swelling, hair loss & colic issues & my other 2 just had a little hair loss & mild NQR issues. They all refuse to eat any of HorseTech’s vit/min supplements.
I feed a vit/min supplement I make myself to all 3 and alfalfa cubes. A few ounces for the 2 younger horses & 1.5lbs for the senior pony. Senior pony also gets flax. It’s pretty simple. Only way to simplify more would be to just turn them out on pasture.
I was told by the place I was boarding them that they were doing well on the coastal they feed their horses and that mine were getting too fat. Turned out to be the opposite when I got them back. My normal permanent fatty was too thin & the other 2 were worse. Also wouldn’t tell me how much alfalfa they were giving my senior. Had a lot more problems with the boarding place, but its not really relevant. Except for the whole them telling me everyone is fat & fine then me getting them back and them being anything but.
The coat thing has improved somewhat since I got them back & have been feeding them the vit/min I make again. Interestingly, their coats look better when they’re on pasture vs the Tifton 85. Must be something different in the mineral balance with the Tifton 85. Senior mare’s current ACTH 23pg/mL.
Now I just need to stop injuring myself so I can get more pasture fenced off for them!

If you didn’t know, Horse Tech will do custom mixes. They did a custom mix for my IR/Cushings horse.
I also know of a lady on another forum that HorseTech did a custom mix for her IR/PSSM horse😀
I feel your pain. My mare is also allergic to all cereal grains used in horse feed. I wasn’t able to find a RB or any commercial feed for that matter that she could have. She is now on bluestem hay, timothy alfalfa pellets and a million supplements (not really) - vit/min supplement, vit E, msm, and Outlast for gut health.

When I contacted HorseTech to request a custom mix, they told me I had to go through an equine nutritionist. They gave me a couple of names. One never returned my email and the other charges $$$ for a consult. I ended up just getting one of Horse Tech’s off-the-shelf mixes which seems compatible with my hay.

Never happened to me - I just told them the exact amounts I wanted in my supplement and they did it.
That never happened to me either!?!?
I live in Valdosta also! There are many feed brands in this area. Pro Elite, Triple Crown, Purina, Nutrena, Seminole, MidSouth, etc.
We feed ProElite Senior and one boarder uses Pro Elite’s Grass Advantage ration balancer.
Some horses cant handle coastal hays and horses are more likely to colic on coastal (impactions), so monitor carefully. We feed perennial peanut hay (nutritionally just about identical to straight alfalfa) in the winter, but otherwise our pastures where I board are incredible, so no hay is needed the rest of the spring/summer.
As for the funky coats…I wouldn’t worry…it’s a very oddly warm winter here and combine that with being from the colder climate, they will be funky.
Can you get copra (coconut meal)? Copra has been used widely here in Australia for many years, but I think it’s fairly new to the US? I have fed it now and then since the mid 1980’s, and would have no hesitation in relying on it for horses with difficult to manage allergies.

Despite what you might read though, like beet pulp I would only ever feed it soaked.
