Gaited horses don't gait when not ridden

All of my STB’s have paced in the paddock, some more than others. My old boy paces more than he trots/canters.He’s out of a kiwi mare but by Exotic Earl if anyone’s interested in bloodlines.

Could be, but I don’t know if bloodlines pacing in turnout means anything. Our American Ideals didn’t pace in turnout (other than the odd stride), Our Life Signs son, on the very odd occaision, and we’ve had him since he was a yearling so lots of opportunity to see him pace on turnout. Our Million Dollar Cam daughter would pace a little, Our Camluck son hardly ever, and the Camotion horse not much at all. A couple of Dragon Again’s, the mare yes and the gelding so far no (but we’ve only had him a few weeks so who knows). Seriously, we’ve had a lot of horse’s through the stable the past 10 odd years, can remember all their lines, but most of them didn’t pace much in turnout.

Idylewood Farms that sat next to mine and whose fields bordered mine housed a few Camluck and Run The Table colts and they would pace the fenceline with my mares. My Direct Scooter and Balanced Image sons and daughters paced and trotted at liberty but their offspring didn’t, maybe because they were further removed from the original sires? Could depend on the speed they’re able to pick up out in the field whether they pick up the pace or not as well.

Wish you well with your horses, I miss being in the thick of it all.

That’s good to know.
