Galway Downs Will Not Host the Olympic Equestrian Events

There are the 5* and they are the pinnacle already. The World Championships will never be that as long as they limit the number of riders from one country.

wow, so disappointing.

LA28 is holding the softball and baseball portions (and maybe some watersports?) in OKC instead of LA, so there is precedence at this games even to hold it elsewhere.

Equestrian is hosted at Santa Anita - want to bet the current format is changed to Area Eventing?

That would be very cool for Lake Placid. I wonder if another city has hosted more than two Olympics in the modern era?

  • Paris, France Summer games (1900, 1924, 2024)
  • London, UK Summer games (1908, 1948, 2012)
  • Los Angeles, USA Summer games (1932, 1984, 2028)

Why in heck would they want to go all the way to Lake Placid? There are places in France and Switzerland. As I recall when the Olympics were in Beijing but the horse bit was Hong Kong it was a big production if anybody wanted to do the opening or closing ceremonies which are such a part of the experience.

What of air pollution? I’ve never visited, only seen pictures of the smog.

The LA2028 committee has proposed holding the paddle events (canoe, kayak) in Oklahoma City. Apparently the infrastructure already exists there as part of a training center.

I’d find it unlikely for them to separate one section of the equestrian events (eventing) since so many teams use much of the same support staff across disciplines.

DC has put in to host the Olympics several times which baffles me no end since there is not even a stadium in DC - everything would have to be in MD and/or VA. They held the WEG in Kentucky. Will be interesting to see what they do.

The wear and tear simply from the spectators alone not even considering the horse wear and tear, plus loss of the income for the owners would make it a tough sell to do cross country on a urban golf course. The course would have to be shut down to golf for what I would have to assume would be several months while jumps are built, tracks are set, and test events are run.

I have no idea what they are going to do about cross country, but hopefully they have a better plan than “we’ll figure something out”.

Such a shame. That infrastructure could have gotten us a Tryon on the west coast.

Dressage and SJ can be run pretty much anywhere… I think it’s time to drop eventing from the Olympics. For the benefit of the discipline. I do not want arena eventing to become the norm.

Too bad they can’t hold the XC at Galway. I know it’s not ideal, but having it off-site at an already-built facility is probably the best compromise.

IOC wants to reduce costs of permanent or impermanent fixtures by using already available sites. No idea why Galway Downs did not make it but that’s what the IOC is aiming for in selecting sites. Maybe they will move equestrian events to the east coast where there are available places or even Kentucky???

I saw a post suggesting Belinda Stronach May have had something to do with NO Galway?

That was my immediate thought - Belinda bought the equestrian events.
