not only will there be no advocate for the horse there, the trainer may be annoyed because she may not see a commission coming her way and will not be exactly friendly towards him.
I know the OP has said the owner is not desperate to get rid of her horse, but I can’t help but feel that a desire to sell him is over-riding any concern she may have for his well-being.

Or she is trying to please her own trainer who is manipulating her into doing this without stepping in to negotiate on her behalf and will be sticking that open palm under her nose for a cut if it does sell.
No, people have all kinds of reasons for allowing themselves to be placed in situations like this and some are just insecure and looking to please. They think the right thing is the one that makes them better liked and don’t want to say no to anybody for fear they will not be as well liked. Women are the worst for this, doormat syndrome or whatever.

Good lord! Does the seller have an adult that can help her through business transactions? This whole thing sounds like a youngster playing make-believe–this mess CAN’T be real…can it?
Guessing that this is for real, the cash should be sent by electronic wire transfer to seller’s bank. Forget the whole check thing. With a wire, the money will be there in a matter of a couple hours.

I keep thinking about this ( I know I need a life:winkgrin:) but even when I was younger I wouldn’t have fallen for this… I re-read the “plan” and I belive that the seller even CAME DOWN from her origional price to go through this mess… and the whole showing him until Jan to see how the kid does??? Who in the HELL asks for this or thinks that that is a reasonable request???.. I could see me going into a sales barn and saying
" Gee I really like this $150,000 FEI horse you have… why don’t you ship him to me and let me try him out for a season… for next to nothing and if he doesn’t work out you can come get him when the seasons over:rolleyes: Oh and I’m not going to sign a contract 'cause ya know my word is good." These people must have balls the size of Texas… and the fact that she is going through with this shows she doesn’t have the sense God gave a gnat… Poor horse he’s the one that is going to suffer for all of this … I don’t think how this is going to affect him has entered either party’s minds.:no:

I am beginning to think this thread is a ruse and there is no “friend with a horse”. I say this because we have asked specific questions like a recent poster who asked where in Florida (not a farm but a city) is it going and no response is given (but in fairness maybe she does not want us to know)…other questions have gone unanswered and the fact this girl would go through with this makes me utterly suspicious…this is just an underlying gut feeling.
The advice throughout the thread has been great and certainly dramatic and interesting but it just seems to odd to be true…It is just destined to end up poorly…
I don;t know…perhaps I am wrong but we will see where this thread goes…

I’m sorry I haven’t answered your EVERY SPECIFIC question, but if you’ll read the whole thread, I haven’t answered ALOT of SPECIFIC questions, being that this IS an public forum and I think I’ve hung enough dirty laundry out for everyone to read, especially being that this isn’t MY HORSE, MY TRANSACTION, MY MONEY or really even my project. “But in fairness,” did you think that maybe I have my own life (you know, enough to pick up the major details put not remember whether the horse is going to Orlando or Ocala or some other city in FL??) And I’m ever so sorry I didn’t answer your PM about the trainers name. I don’t know it, I haven’t asked it and I don’t think it’s anyone’s business but the girl selling the horse and the kid who may (or may not) be buying the horse. I live two hours from the girl making the (potential) sale and her trainer (who isn’t really involved in the situation aside from the buyer’s trainer being her daughter) is three hours away from THERE, it’s not like I grew up riding with this girl and her trainer and know every little thing going on. I haven’t been fielding the phone calls and I’m sure that (gasp) I’m missing some details myself, nevermind the ones I might have withheld. I’m sorry I haven’t given you every morsel of information.
And also, the last person who asked where the horse was going did so at 10:40 today. TODAY. Which was around 6 hours ago? Again, I’m sorry that I have a job that keeps me away from the computer for blocks of time that tend to be more than six hours. I can’t exactly jump to answer questions, even if I wanted to specifically answer them.
I’m a “young professional” trying to “make it” in the industry and I use COTH as a learning tool constantly. I try to stay informed and getting other’s outlooks and opinions (even bitchy hateful ones) is ALWAYS better than making big mistakes. I try to pass on this information to my friends who are horsey but not neccessarily trying to enter the industry as much as I can, as they look to me for real world advice. Our college equestrain center and students hasn’t been around enough to be thoroughly jaded, and you know, without rose colored glasses firmly implanted on some people’s faces, it’d be awfully hard to sell horses and aquire lesson students. (Do you really think little Suzy can make it to the olypics one day? Sure, lets start with learning to post and go from there!)

For everyone else, I know, the whole thing is crazy, and I realize I didn’t mention this, but she is writing up a contract to be signed and notarized. I mentioned making sure the check will clear, money order etc, but I don’t know what she plans to do for that, frankly, I don’t know that it’s my business.
She does work for a VERY big name reining trainer who is helping her out, but again, the BNT is used to doing transactions with other BNTs and doesn’t seem as put off by the situation, but will hopefully help to keep her out of trouble. BNT routinely ships reining horses off to sale situations around the country, but I don’t know the ins and outs of how they handle it.

Some people just have to learn lessons the hard way. This sounds like one of them. I hate it when young, naive people won’t listen to the been there done that crowd who KNOW the scams so well…

(1) a phone call to the bank is not sufficient. That might provide info on whether funds are available at that moment, but does not prevent the buyer from stopping payment on a check, for example. Bank wire, Western Union, or a cashier’s or certified check would be better.
(2) Contract – I would not proceed without a signed contract. But it sounds like the purchase price is not very high, and in the event the buyer breaches the contract, a few days’ attorneys’ fees could meet or exceed the cost of the horse.

Seriously though, things just don’t add up. They have a house on the ocean ( we are talking mega-bucks) yet they can’t fly up to KY AND they argue a mere(for them) $3000.
Sounds way too much like the typical internet horse scams where the “buyer” sends a check for a horse they have never seen in person, sends a shipper, and check turns out to be worthless after horse is long gone!:no:

edited to say, its so like a really good train wreck, but in slow motion - you saw the thing approaching the bridge over the chasm, knew half the span was collapsed, told the engineer who is going to keep on going because the passengers think everything will turn out ok anyway…
I too am concerned she doesn’t end up chained up to a iron ring in a basement somewhere in Oregon, but hey! In the end, we can all look back and remember a point when we made a choice for our own destiny.
OK - I know the OP and the girl in question. It is NOT the OP’s horse (she’s got better ones to deal with anyhow) and yes, the girl who own the horse is not the brightest crown in the box. I feel sorry for her horse, cause knowing him, he will NOT hold up to super hard riding. I just hope he isn’t permanently crippled by this.
Don’t be calling the OP a troll when she was trying to seek what was best for her friend.

I ought to throw a couple of my sale horses on the trailer too. Six weeks of torture in FL might make them a little happier to have my ass riding them.
