I drive a 2003 Ford Excursion with the 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel. I get 18-20 mpg unhitched/hwy and 15-16 mph hauling / hwy. No problems with the 6.0L in 9 years and 140,000 miles.I used to haul my daughters horses halfway across the country twice a year for 4 years when she went to horsey college. I would not have a gas motor for that task.
Now I rarely haul more than an hour away on flat Long Island, so I might consider gas for my next one but the gas F250 (which is the same chassis as the Excursion) gets MUCH worse mileage than the PSD so the only savings is in initial cost. I haven’t found maintenance costs to be high except of course the $100 oil changes.
I second the cool factor when starting up the diesel. 9 years later, it still makes me smile…
Yeah, there sure is some “grunt factor” inherent in a big diesel a la Tim Allen. LOL
If I were you I guess I would go with diesel.
