horseprerace.com, although it looks like they don’t have the big multi-dose tubes right now.
I do the preventative dose (1/4tube) 1-2 days before, through the show, and 1-2 days after. I follow the same protocol if my horse is on any NSAID, or has any other stressful event.
My horse went through a long gastrogard treatment. Now I do 1/2 tube of GG starting 2 days before the show (and during). He also lives on ranitidine. Also no NSAIDs at shows (not even Equioxx)—just gets a shot of Legends before.

Maybe because of this FDA letter? Won’t the fact that the patent on Gastroguard expired in April have an effect on prices soon?

The show horses at my work get 1/3 of a tube of generic omeprazole every day, and a full tube the morning they ship out.
Just came across this regarding the difference between Gastroguard and Ulcerguard:
My horse is on Smartgut every day but I give him a dose of ulcer guard the day before and the day of a show. If we stay away he gets a notch every day. It’s not as high a dose as a tube of gastroguard but it’s enough IMO to stop excess acid from the stress of competing affecting him.
I have noticed a difference definitely. It just takes the edge off of him and he’s much more able to relax. He is an OTTB who picked up ulcers flying over here from europe and while they are gone now I think it is good to keep on top of these things. He also gets it if he moves barns or pastures or anything that might upset him :).
For the actual treatment of ulcers I used those blue pop rocks. They worked really really well and I tapered them off slowly after 4 weeks for another 4 weeks to prevent reaccurance.

Where do you get generic omeprazole paste ?[/QUOTE]
We have to get ours from the vet. I’m getting a months supply on Friday as Sully is showing all the classic ulcer symptoms but when he was scoped nothing showed. He’s super picky and won’t touch any hay or cubes, won’t put weight on,'lost his shiny coat, etc since his major colic and vet clinic stay so vet is recommending a month of treatment!

Just came across this regarding the difference between Gastroguard and Ulcerguard:
My vet price matches the Gastrogard to whatever the cheapest Ulcergard is, so it’s more convenient for me to just get the Gastrogard.

Since getting FDA approval is expensive, I think the two are the same product; they just did not get FDA approval on Ulcerguard. And Ulcerguard (full tube daily) has healed my daughter’s horse’s ulcers according to the scope we did last week.

Legends? Is that you Mama M? ??
I do a tube the day before a show, a tube a day at the show and one more day after. I’ve done this with both horses that have had ulcers and ones that have not. Its always a good idea, and cannot hurt your horse to do so. Its a good preventative.
You can also look at U7 or other Smart Pak supplements such as Smart Gut Ulra. As a preventative alternative.
The link to the generic omeprazole paste that we have used b4 is: http://horseprerace.com/stomach-medicines/omeprazole-paste-2.3gr/
For those buying lots of Ulcer/Gastroguard, below is a link to rebates Merial is offering. I did this last summer and saved money. Also rebates for Marquis, Legend, and Equioxx. Offer ends July 31st.

Just came across this regarding the difference between Gastroguard and Ulcerguard:
The difference is in the dosing, not the concentration of medication. Both tubes contain 2.3g omeprazole. Ulcergard is designed to be given at 1/4 the dosage of Gastrogard (1.8 vs .45mg per pound of body weight). A tube of Ulcergard contains 4 doses and Gastrogard contains 1.

Correct. There is absolutely no difference between a tube of Gastroguard and a tube of Ulcerguard before the label is applied. The difference is that one has OTC approval at a lower dose for prevention and one has prescription approval at a higher treatment dose. It’s like the difference between OTC Tylenol and prescription Tylenol - i.e. same drug, same pill, but the dose is different.
We give 1/4 tube for our horses on days that they show.
