Gastrogard instructions

Being a longtime Thoroughbred owner, I’m all too familiar with ulcers. This winter, despite preventive measures, my OTTB’s behavior convinced me to treat him with the 28-day regimen of Gastrogard. When I picked it up at the vet clinic, the office assistant strictly instructed that the paste be administered half an hour prior to morning feed, which I found curious since, in my past experience, the time of day did not matter as long as grain and hay were withheld half an hour before and after the Gastrogard. I know she meant well, but have my doubts about this early morning requirement. Just thought I’d check what protocol anybody else follows in case things have changed since I last used Gastrogard a number of years ago.

I used this last year and no the morning isn’t special. I assume they think that’s the longest fasting stretch of the 24 hour cycle but some of us have over night automatic feeders or hay bags.

Yup, all too familiar with this protocol this year. My mini came home from the clinic with these instructions but don’t remember doing it this way in years past. TBH I do forget once in awhile he ends up with it at random times. He’s also on sucralfate and fitting it all in at certain times gets challenging every so often

My horses are not stalled so they have grass and/or hay at all times all year around. I don’t think I morning matters due to this. Just keep it away from the timing of grain. Both horses I have treated were fixed and I did afternoons due to boarding and work schedule.

Maybe she was assuming the horse is stalled at night with limited hay?

Think you’ll be fine either way.

Agreed! Horse is not stalled so likely eating grass all night anyway. Thanks, all!
