General Safety Question re: Polos and Standing Wraps

I dont know about the polos, it seems like it would be hard to make sure they stayed put. All my horses live outside with run-ins. We dont have a barn so if one were to be injured and require wrapping then they would have to wear it outside. I would have to find a way to make sure its secure, water tight-ish, and change it everyday. Crossing my fingers that never comes to pass.

Last winter, my mare had a leg injury that required wrapping 24/7. She was turned out in her normal field with all her buddies with a quilt and stable bandage, and she was fine. I was uncomfortable with it especially at first, but at the time she was not my horse, so I knew I wouldn’t be responsible for the vet bills if anything happened! Not something I would do again as I think her old owner had a horseshoe up her a** but it worked at the time!!

A place I used to ride at turned out in standing wraps… But these were mostly schoolies. Never had a single issue.

Polos, yes, if you know how to wrap correctly and secure them with tape. I would only use them for a few hours at a time though.

My guy will get turned out in standing wraps (generally up front) if I don’t get to the barn early enough to unwrap him before he is turned out after a show day and I don’t worry about it too much. They have good velcro, he doesn’t try and rip them off, and I’ve never had a wrap slip down on him (knock on wood).

Even when he dinged his suspensory over the summer and was wrapped 24/7 up front for about 2 weeks, he went out overnight (in a small dirt paddock but still). Never had a problem.

In my mind I’d rather get the horse out and moving, even wrapped, then not turn out at all. Now I wouldn’t recommend it with polos as they really don’t serve much purpose and are less secure.

No, not real turnout. Maybe supervised in a tiny paddock in perfectly dry weather, but not real turnout.

This is almost 4 years old…
