George Morris on the SS list

Yes. This.

My thoughts exactly.

It happened in dressage barns too. I know of at least one well known barn where more than one underage girl was groomed, raped and then taken for an abortion. One of those girls is my friend.

Yes, a couple of dressage trainers have been banned, by criminal disposition, but I don’t think it is as prevalent.

I would imagine that is simply an issue of numbers(%) of population in the whole

Ugh. I can’t imagine everyone in the barn was oblivious to it either. It’s about time all the scum was drained out of the sport.

Could be, but I think we dressage people are just more mannerly and well behaved. (Semi-joking.)

traditionally there have been fewer children and young riders. That probably helps limit the pedophile interests.

The business model is much different as well. Rarely do you see Dressage barns with school horses.

As far as manners, one only needs to look as far as all the Micheal Barisone threads to see grown women losing it on another adult. No different than any other forum.

I find the second part of your post quite odd. If we are talking about dressage riders being or not being more mannerly than other equestrians, why do you refer me to examples of “grown women losing it on another adult” in the Michael Barisone threads?

For an example of a badly behaved dressage rider, isn’t the person who pulled a gun and shot someone in the chest the person who is most ill-mannered and ill-behaved of all?

You half jokingly said Dressage riders are more mannerly. I pointed to those threads because it shows how they are no more mannerly than any other discipline. I’m not speaking to pros exclusively, I’m speaking to discipline community as seen on this BB.

When I half-jokingly said dressage people were more mannerly and well behaved, I meant that they were less likely to sexually abuse children, and therefore showed up less frequently on the SS list.

Therefore I thought the logical counter example to my (half-joking) assertion would be Michael Barisone, rather than the people making remarks about his case on an internet BB.

My apologies for the misunderstanding. Yeah I think the business model for Dressage barns and the adult to kid ratio is the reason behind that. I think there’s less opportunity. Granted I haven’t worked in or boarded at a dressage barn in a long time so maybe it has changed?

I wonder too if there are more male trainers in the H/J world than in the dressage world. To me it seems like there are but that could also be that I am more familiar with the H/J crowd than the dressage crowd.

ETA: The only dressage riders I knew that couldn’t get their horses to a show by themselves were the ones who had their horses out of state with an UL trainer. Dressage seems to create a less codependent atmosphere.

Does anybody else share my rather cynical view that as important and long overdue the SafeSport training requirement is, its purpose is as much to absolve NGBs from liability should one of their members assault a student, as it is about actually protecting the students?

Whether someone like Duncan McIntosh believes in the training he completed and acts in accordance with it, the USEF can say it did its due diligence in providing him the training and can’t be held responsible should he decide to behave inappropriately.

Ha! Nope, sadly. Just drop by the DressageHub Facebook page or scroll through any of the threads about the Michael Barisone shooting if you want to see the crazy, nasty, vicious side of dressage. Thankfully those people do not represent the sport as a whole. I do find it puzzling that H/J seems to be the only discipline actively fighting against SafeSport. I have heard very little opposition from other riders and trainers about it.

Well GM is practically the founding father of H/J, not even taking into account Jimmy Williams and Rob Gage, no other discipline has seen their pillar disgraced and banned forever so it makes sense that H/J people would be the most vocal.

Also, isn’t the H/J discipline the biggest group in the USEF? So even if it’s the same percentage of people who object in every discipline, that still adds up to more numbers in the H/J group.

I’d say that is a tad cynical because the creation and operation of SS was an act of Congress that was forced on USEF whether they wanted it or not. USEF is required to get their members to take the training and required to enforce any sanctions that come out of SS.

USEF leadership should be thankful this happened as policing child abuse is no longer their responsibility, but I don’t see USEF as shrewdly making the move; they just accepted the congressional creation of SS (not that they had the option to not accept it.)

USA Gymnastics was sued over the Nasser scandal, but Nasser was the official team doctor that gymnasts were required to see, he abused pretty much the whole team, and when complaints were made, USA Gymnastics covered things up rather than acting to stop the abuse.

I don’t see how USEF could plausibly be held responsible for the behavior of someone who is merely a member of the organization, as opposed to a high level employee.
