George Morris on the SS list

I found this old thread that describes some of the nasty comments GM made over the years (they aren’t all from GM, but many are). https://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/forum/discussion-forums/hunter-jumper/13866-funny-mean-or-combination-quotes-sayings

Putting dirt in the mouth of a rider who yawned during a clinic? Making another rider roll in the dirt? To be honest, he is beginning to sound like a sociopath. Perhaps this whole debacle will trigger some reflection by the h/j community as to how such abusive behavior came to be widely accepted and even admired as the path to riding prowess. It’s like there was some kind of mass delusion going on. (And I don’t mean on this board. By and large people on this forum are such intelligent and independent thinkers, it is really quite impressive).

He did those things, and STILL became great, God-like to too many.
I think that is the point.
Those actions [see the linked thread above] should have brought his greatness to a screeching halt.
How sad that it didn’t.

If you like Mexican food, you go to a Mexican restaurant. If you like children, you go where the children are. You might like children in a healthy way, or you might like them in a sick way.

Perhaps you are attracted to them in a sexual way, or perhaps you are cruel and insecure. If you are cruel and insecure, you can choose both children and animals as victims. That is why there is cruelty all over in the animal show worlds.

It is nothing new. My mother still talks about a teacher she had in grade school. He was verbally vicious and physically vicious. He enjoyed castigating and beating children he deemed as having misbehaved. You can still see the terror in her eyes as she speaks of him. She will be 90 in a couple of months.

To me, GM advertised his nature in his clinics. Anything else you might tell me about his transgressions is not a surprise.

Thank you for explaining it better.

I joined the I stand with George page to see what they are saying.
Within the last couple of hours, Jim Giorgio posted his suggestion for a “Federal class action lawsuit”, with the math again (just $10 per person if 50,000 people contribute. )

It was a comment on a post by Ann Reilly, who responded “We need to do this.” … “This is just making the sport look BAD, and their [sic] will be a drop in participation. Who wants their kids in a sport where it looks like it’s [sic] leaders have been bad eggs for years.”

”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹Indeed.

Do people ever read what they write?

Well I’m a lot LESS likely to put my kid in a sport where all the well known professionals close ranks to protect an abuser, than I am to put my kid in a sport where the governing body at least sanctions people and bans them when things are discovered.

Do they even hear themselves?

Which was of course every school and church and family’s line for decades.

Ssshhh no one can know!

We certainly can’t even try to curtail sexually assaulting children, so it’s imperative we shut people up

If all that wasn’t enough- admitting/claiming or both to 10,000 sexual partners also tells you there is something NQR.

(just to be clear- I realize under 18 is a minor which =child, heck sometimes anyone younger than me I call a child. I typically think of child as below the age of puberty and minor as under 18. Not to split hairs).

LOL Sooooo traditional. If you don’t like the message, kill the messenger.

More importantly people are rallying around a convicted sex offender. Just google Jim Gorgio

Following this more or less closely. I’d suggest taking pause before joining that page in support of GM. It would be very easy to get lumped into a certain group when your name appears on the list of supporters.

I have been a GM fan for a long time. This scandal has made me reevaluate. No one is important enough to overlook, defend, or coverup the abuse of a child. It’s not ok and I believe SS did the right thing. I hope they are brave enough to stand firm.

[URL=“https://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/forum/discussion-forums/hunter-jumper/13866-funny-mean-or-combination-quotes-sayings”] Edited: that should have been a quote

You know what floors me? Most of the responders thought those things were hilarious. And that was only about 10 years ago.

Gross about GMs actions in clinics, and training riders. He SCREAMS abuser, not sure how it was missed all those years. Kind of insane when you think about it.

I found the best way to tackle the #istandwithgeorge on Facebook. I just reply with - thank you for making it public you support child predators!

I doubt anyone wants that comment associated with them, so either will delete or wear the label. Either way is a win.

I also think #youstandwithchildabusers is another good reply comment for those ones.

Just trying to think of ways to change the message they are putting out. I wish I was creative enough to make a good meme I could just post under all the supportive comments.

“Rights” and “innocence” are meaningful words to many USEF members, especially when the rules they agree to as members can be over taken by SS. USEF membership didn’t have a vote on whether to allow SS to be able to set down members; it was mandated by the federal government.

If members disagree with the SS process, their choice is to take a stand, and demand reform, and/or cancel their memberships. Both are happening. Not everyone is defending GM’s actions that caused him to be banned from USEF; they’ve joined the I Stand with George group because they object to the SS process (not the intent), as it’s being implemented.

they believe in innocence…

Oh the irony.

The problem is when many of the folks objecting to the “process” don’t even bother to understand what the process is, and continue to basically make stuff up about it.

Then maybe they should have joined one of the FB groups that were actually about Overhauling SafeSport if that is their actual goal.

How about #IStandWithVictims

I think that those who are trying to defend GHM are seeking to make SS look like McCarthyism for the equine world. Insert “sex offender” for “Communist”, and you get my drift. In other words, they want SS to look like some kind of movement that has gone awry, and is netting innocent equestrians. Not. So. Much.

As I stated before, even if I had the money, I wouldn’t have ridden with GHM, after watching him teach. His protégé was nasty to me once- albeit for an hour and a half, while I rode a jumper (I was there for equitation lessons) Ironically, this was at Murray’s parents farm. I didn’t go back.

There is no way anyone could possibly define GHM’s behavior over the decades as “nice”, and the kind of intimidation that he offers would make me believe that people who wanted to be in his good graces might do things they could later regret.
