Any updates on this OP?
I ended up just doing 3 stalls with Stall Savers. I compared the samples and found that both stall skins and stall savers had a finished side that was more abrasion resistant than the soft felted finish of the geo fabric. All three were of comparable thickness and apparent tear strength. I’m not sure what the difference in longevity would be but I liked the finish of Stall Savers’ textured product.

How do you like the Stall Skins? And do you use lots of bedding to cover them?
I’m considering these for my stalls and shed area because I’m in SC and currently my stall floor is native sand. Lovely and soft and drains beautifully, but dusty as hell. My horses live out with access to stalls and shed 24/7, and I’d rather not bed if I don’t have to but I need to do something because watering my stalls every other day is silly
Would the stuff hold up do you think? (I have an email in to the company but I haven’t heard back yet.) Only 1 horse is shod, 2 are ponies, and the 4th is an elderly TB who’s also barefoot.
I really like them but I can’t comment on the longevity. My horses are only in for an hour a day with food so there is little wear. I don’t have them bedded very deep but it sure is nice not having puddles of urine soaked bedding to muck out!
I wonder how badly the sand would shift under the mats and leave ruts?
What do you have under yours?
I put the FoamFooting from performance footing under our stall savers. It works excellent since some of our horses need the extra cushion. This was on top of the permeable base we installed in each stall using 3" BaseCore HD , filled with 1 inch minus and compacted. Then added 1-2 inches of the Foam footing, the stall avers and we are good to go.
I used pond liners. Bit thinner than stall skins, same material. Zero wear issues in four years save for one young stallion on medical stall rest. The damage he did would have happened to a stall skin as well. The makers of stall skins even say to put a rubber mat down where they strike for those that dig at the ground a lot. Sold the farm so idk how they are now but I’m sure they had a lot of life left and were way cheaper.
They were around $8/linear ft when I bought them, looks like they’ve gone up a bit. The 180 mil thickness.
