Getting Meds in the Uncooperative Horse

Does anyone have a better suggestion?

we have two minies on Prascend … a person has to become hardened to the fact they hate the stuff so their half tab each is in a very small amount of grain that is offered before they get their hay while locked in their stalls… no eat meds, no get out of stall, no hay …that is the only grain they get, they have not staved to death yet

I know quite a few people who do this, and it doesn’t harm anything. It doesn’t adversely affect anything, as it’s a pill that can get crunched (and can be broken in half on purpose)

My friend drills a tiny hole in a bunch of carrot pieces and then just adds the pracend at feeding time. Give him the doctored one, then an untreated one right after

For a while I was smooshing it in a piece of a nutrigrain bar or soft granola bar. Kind of like the Newton, I think. Of late, she has deigned to eat it on top of her grain, which I dampen with a bit of hot water soaked with a peppermint candy for a couple of minutes.

My recently diagnosed Cushings mini accepted an apple slice with the Prascend in it for the first two weeks but now refuses. I bought some horse treats meant for hiding a pill. We’ll see how long this will work.
Edited to add…2 days later she’s saying no to the treats.

I feel your pain- my mare has gone from an equine vacuum cleaner to VERY picky about treats and feed since starting Prascend. I’m surprised that your vet says not to dissolve the pill, I’m pretty sure that the package insert says it’s OK. You might want to check with the drug company. My understanding is that it the tabs should not be left out for more than a few minutes because they lose there potency. I dissolve and syringe immediately. My girl’s ACTH levels are nice and low with this routine

My horse gets his Prascend dissolved in about 6cc of water which is administered via syringe. He was getting it in his feed for a while until I was finding the pill on the stall floor a couple of times a week (how many “lost” pills did I miss?). The syringe is certain.
