getting rid of ticks

as opposed to some other way? I have never noticed.
I use the stuff from Springtime Labs
http://www.springtimeinc.com/product/29/1?r=garlicH
which I know is air dried. There are probably others too…if the jar does not say…I would assume the worst and freeze dried as that is the cheapest way to process it.

it’s dogs, not horses, who get anemia from garlic.

I know people CLAIM garlic repels bugs, but really it doesn’t. Try a blinded test- feed half your horses garlic and not the other half and I guarantee you will not notice any difference in bugginess or ticks.

Equispot works great to get rid of ticks on horses.
From my own experience…I can tell by the face fly population when we ran out of garlic and I was short on money to buy more at that point. Bazillions of Amish around here use it and swear by it. Here: of 14 horses it works on 13. There is one chestnut gelding that has his poor face covered with flies regardless. It does not seem to work for him. Luckily he can keep a flymask on. He is the great REMOVER of fly masks from every other horse (why we went to trying the garlic) but no one gets HIS…that and I didn’t want to put chemicals (Equispot) on preggo mares. It took about 2 weeks to notice a difference…it does not magically work overnight or anything.

Ditto the frontline spray, my horse was an absolute tick magnet (ok…that made me giggle ) and I spritzed a bit around the pastern of each leg, and at his dock and poll- keeps them away really well.

Bronco fly spray kills deer ticks. Spray daily.

I used cat tick collars last year around each leg and front line on mane and tail. Worked well, collars lasted all summer. I used the Seresto ones and the Adam’s one with no issues. Found maybe 1 or 2 ticks tops while barn mates were pulling them off left and right. Already ordered my set for this year.

I put my extremely fly-sensitive mare on Bug Check at the end of the summer, and it made a noticeable difference - I couldn’t use enough fly spray before I tried it, and within about three weeks, a fly mask was all she needed to be comfortable. I kept her on it over the winter as this is a high Lyme-risk area, and have continued with it into the spring. Again, so far, no fly spray.

I’d recommend trying this just for the flies as I’ve so far been very pleased with it, but it may also help with ticks.

Ditto this as well as the Freedom Spot 45. I think I’m going to try the Frontline spray this year too and see how it works.

Wow, old thread

I feed garlic for ticks. I started last year, after I had two with anaplasmosis in March. Didn’t expect a whole lot, but thought I’d try before going to the spot on type topicals because my horses really dislike the application of those.

Did not see any ticks on the horses after starting it  What a wonderfully pleasant surprise.

Stopped in November or December when it got really cold, started back up on March 1. No ticks on horses this year so far.

I use the stuff from Springtime–supposedly the air dried (vs freeze dried) garlic has less chance of Heinz body anemia. Horses had no problem accepting it with their grain.

Glad this was resurrected! I have been looking for a solution to my tick magnet as well. Asked my vet about Frontline Spray and she said she recommends it and it works well for horses.

Used to feed garlic but don’t remember it’s effect on ticks…maybe worth a try. Probably too late into the season to start now.

When did EquiSpot come out, anyway? I only found out about it maybe 5 years ago, but I am sometimes a little slow with the new products…

Anyway, just use EquiSpot if you can.

I started last year after tick season began, and had beautiful results. It wasn’t this late, but had already had numerous tick bites in March :frowning: Began in April-ish?

This is been a really bad tick year so far and I have one that gets eaten up. Equispot/Freedom 45/Spot On hasn’t been that effective.

I bought neem oil to try for fleas for the cats, so tried it on the horses. I have something that likes to eat them along their midline and makes them so itchy. It really seems to help for that. I added it to some fly spray with cedar oil in it, and I have no ticks!

I am also experimenting with just putting some of the neem oil on my hand and rubbing it on their faces to keep off flies since they refuse to keep fly masks on. https://www.amazon.com/Neem-100-Pure-Uncut-16oz/dp/B001SBI8XQ/ref=sr_1_59?ie=UTF8&qid=1525555813&sr=8-59&keywords=neem+oil

It has an “interesting” smell.
